Key largo fishing trip

Let me start by saying, as a long time reader and first time poster, this blog has served as an invaluable resource for all of my VA/DC/MD fishing since moving back here from the Philippines in 2013. The community has been extremely helpful in all endeavors and a special shoutout to dan for all of his sage-like wisdom on all things salt and fresh!

My brother and I are traveling to key largo this Sunday and will have some time to wade or kayak fish around the area. I was hoping to see if anyone had tips for spots and tactics, fly and spin based, to get into some solid DIY fishing. Last year we threw shrimp at mangroves and came up with small snapper almost every cast, but this year we are hoping to trick fish as opposed to feeding them and ideally encountering some other species. Thanks in advance and look forward to more actively participating in this thread and with the group in the future.

As Casey mentioned, Pennecamp Park is the place to be.  I fished there last year. Rented kayaks out of Florida Bay Outfitters. There is a launch area where they met me to put the boat right in the water. 

One of their guys was getting into guiding so I was a first time customer.  I rented a peddle drive hobie  from launch site south to 25.122845, -80.399522 on the largo sound.  he said tarpon were there but we did not see any.  We circumnavigated the entire sound stopping at some spots to rest and anchor up and fish.

We did see a tailing permit in there but I could not get a shot on it.  It seemed like the mangroves held lots of varieties like snook, mangrove snapper, jacks, small barracudas, etc.

I ended up cutting thru 25.137377, -80.395918
and on the blackwater sound side, dropped some shrimp on a spinning rod.  you should be able to see the drop off where they carved out the canal.  i caught some big snapper in there.

i ended up paddling back to florida bay outfitters and saw some huge snook along the mangrove but did not catch any.

doesn't really count as fly fishing, but I trolled a fly when paddling to different locations and caught a bunch of small barracudas.

Standard tarpon flies, clousers, half and halfs, shrimp patterns should work down there.

Second everything said about Pennecamp.  Make sure to stop and eat at a place called Snooks.  I think it is a right turn if your headed south toward the end of KL.  Right on the water and great redfish.  Wishing I was there now...

Flats north side near Card Sound Bridge, tarpon on bay side of Adams Cut.  Ocean Drive dead ends south of Publix. Find the opening in the mangroves and wade through. It will open up to a flat.
