Heading up to NJ this weekend, can't wait. We're going up to do a Cystic Fibrosis charity walk on Sunday in Pt Pleasant. We're staging at a friend's house in Brigantine on Saturday... In the down time I hope to get tight with stripers or blues or something off the jetties or in the surf. Pt pleasant has great fishing, never tried Brigantine, anyone out there with any pointers? Tentatively, I'm planning tactics around 9-ft 8 and 10 weights with sinking line. Clousers, sand eels, surf candy.... We'll see.

The north end of brigantine has some good surf fishing, but not a lot of fly casters out there. Ive never brought a fly rod out there, but it can't hurt to try. You can drive out on the beach there, with a permit, which is nice. Stop by riptide bait and tackle http://www.riptidebaitandtackle.com/ , Also check out the rod and reel tavern for some good bar food and a mount of the world record striper.

That Outbound line is awesome. You'll be tossing line effortlessly. Be sure to thoroughly clean all your gear and sink that reel in fresh water when done.

Cool..

I've geared up to do some serious salt fly fishing and am looking for an opportunity to do that with others. Recently purchsed a TFO Axiom 10 wt with RIO Outbound Intermediate sinking fly line for distance casting into the surf. Should be able to handle those 20 to 60 pound saltwater wish should I ever hook one up...

Good luck and do tell about your salt experiences...take and post pics please... :-)

You can fish the jetties out front if you're using a fly rod (wear studded boots if you have them, and use caution). Bass reports have been sorta weak up that way lately, but there seems to be a lot of blues around and you can often find them right off the jetties. You'll also be very close to Island Beach State Park. If you have time to get there, you may want to consider fishing the back side of the island, which is easier than the ocean side with the fly rod.

Ok a report as requested...

As planned I got a few hours in the surf at North end of Brigantine yesterday afternoon. Sorry to say I caught no fish but it was a BLAST and a learning experience.
- A guy up the beach landed a 30-in bass on a bloodworm so they were definitely in there, but that was the only action I saw anyone having.
- Mishap! I forgot my $&@!?(! Stripping basket at home which made it much harder. The water was not crazy so I sort of managed.
- I re-learned, even with my sloppy double haul a fly is a real challenge to present in wind out past the breakers. I need to practice (fish more).
- My new (used) 10-wt setup (st croix legend elite & bauer m5) purchased from another TPFR member worked perfectly. Also was pleased to see the action on a couple flies I'd tied seemed good. Afterwards I hosed it all off and wiped it down. Wondering if wet backing on the arbor is an issue. Hopefully not.
- My fancy Reddington waders still worked great --however the waterproof zippered pocket still isn't. Glad it was only my wallet in there and not my cell phone this time.

It's now 0545 and I may sneak out again to you know, go get a coffee... Over on the bay side... With the 8 wt... :-). We'll see.

Later we're all up to Pt Pleasant for the Great Strides CF charity walk. If you enjoyed this post, consider donating to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and/or angling in a CF charity tournament like Redbone. Money funds reasearch and technology that has since the 1970s increased the average life of CF patients like my nephew Charlie from only a few years to 35 years, and God willing will someday cure them.

Tight lines everybody! Matt

Thanks for the post, Afrofly! Lurk away but posts like that are very helpful and experience like yours is a great resource on the forum.
Island Beach State Park is a treasure; I kayaked there on birdwatching and nature-tours when I was a kid before I ever fly fished, and agree it's a slick way to get around the Bay side. Since, I've read about the 4wd permits and the surf fishing scene there especially when there is a blitz going on. I haven't experienced one, or even fished there yet, but it's on my list. My flyrod salt experience is minimal, but growing, I learn a bit each time and hopefully it'll pay off. I scored on weakfish, blues, and herring on my 8wt in surf at Sea Isle City and on a boat along Cape May's USCG station jetty last summer and really had fun. Small fish, but fighters and it was a proof-of-concept and confidence builder. One of these days I hope to tie into something serious... Like all of us I suppose.

For an earlier poster who recommended the rod and reel tavern, sadly I must report it is now defunct. They'd fallen on hard times and I guess Hurricane Sandy was the last straw. The (now apparently former) world record striper mount is supposedly housed in a local museum.

The Clouser's and Sand Candy patterns are you best bet for flies along with sinking or intermediate line. If Blues are around you better have some rough leaders. If you don't have good balance and aren't use to walking on slippery rocks even with corkers on  stay off the rocks, being mobile around the Jetty's is the most important thing carry just what you need. keep checking your leaders for small gashes the rocks are unforgiving.
