Hey all,

Anybody closer to downtown...what does the tidal basin look like today?

I went out there earlier today for a couple hours. Not much luck... Water is still high and very muddy. Lots of action on the top of the water but nothing cared for what I had, big or small.

Top water splashes most likely spawning activity by herring/shad. A bad day out there is still a fun day in my books.

Shad are indeed stacked up in the tidal basin. Hundreds and hundreds right at the wall. No interest in my darts though.

Caught one very small rockfish (?) and saw a bait fisherman land an enormous carp.

I had one bite that left me puzzled. Something nailed my dart on the retrieve, bent my rod considerably (small-med spinning gear), stripped line at lightning speed for about 2-3 seconds, then spit the lure. I was so stunned/the rod was bent so strongly that I didn't think to set the hook. It really reminded me of the way steelhead hit, or the few experiences I've had with sharks in saltwater, just on a smaller scale. Any idea what hits like that might be lurking in the tidal basin?

My guess is that it was a gar. They strike like lightning, are big and strong, and are very hard to sink a hook into. Could have been anything though! Was your hook bent?

That sounds about right.  I didn't notice that the hook was bent any, nor were there any major dings on the jighead.  Like you said, could have been anything - I guess that's what keeps us coming back.

If you were fishing flies (darts) near the bottom of the Tidal Basin, chances are you may have raked it over a catfish or carp.  The shad flies gape is fairly large and are easily lodged in fish scales.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a gar in the Basin.

Last may there were tons of gar spawning at the Ohio drive inlet. Couldn't get them to notice a large clouser, but some old timers snagged 3 or 4 "fishing" with a weighted treble.

Were they on the Potomac side (by the fencing) or the Basin side of the inlet?

on the basin side. saw them a handful of times, but in significant numbers only in the fast water when the tide was rushing in through the inlet.

They stack up on the inside in mating pairs. Once done mating they are relatively easy to catch. I've grabbed a few when passing by me on flooded sidewalks. I'll look for a pic.

Here are the spawning pairs from 2011. They will be stacked up in Roaches Run too (someone posted a few years ago about them along the Mt. Vernon trail)soon-the ones in pairs don't chase flies. Wait for them to finish their 'fun' and then toss flies to them.  There is a good conversation about gar flies and gar feeding on the Itinerant Angler forum.

Very cool.  Will have to stick my head out there and take a look on the way to work?

Last June I caught several gar at the basin using rope flies.  Need to find a more water repellent rope though, roll casting water logged 6" fly was a pain
