Hi all,

I've been in VA for a month now and have been researching my tail off on locations. Went out a couple times so far but due to the river levels I haven't had much success. I just wanted to see if it would be worth trying to fish Point of Rocks this weekend (Saturday). I know its projecting a 50% percent of rain now and the river is at 3.11 so I don't know if it would be worth my time and if I should go explore other places this weekend. I live McLean so the drive isn't bad at all.
Any pointers would be much appreciated on this location and/or other spots in MD or VA within 2 hours. I have 4, 5s, and 8wt setups so I can really play in any situation I figure.

Thank you all in advance for the help!!

Mike

I don't know if 3ft is reasonable at the Point of Rocks gauge, but local rain is not usually an issue on the Potomac.  You have to worry more about upstream rain, and know how long it takes the crest to flow down stream.  The predicted river levels are good for that.

Mike,

Read through this thread, there are some good benchmarks there for Little Falls and Point of Rocks. If you want to look at flow levels, a median July flow is good for wading but unfortunately it is about three times a typical flow. I'm gonna say it is a no go this weekend on foot. Check out smaller rivers or trout streams for fishable water.

If the Point of Rocks gage is 2.25 and falling, I will venture out to wade in the Potomac at Point of Rocks and upstream to Harpers - above that no thanks. If the gage is 1.75, that's just about optimal in my book.

I hit up Turkey Run on Friday evening and it was high and dirty, and got el skunko.  Fished Harpers Ferry (down river a bit) on Sunday morning and had a great day. A handful of smallies in a couple hours and 4x sunfish. Water was a bit high but not too bad, and much much clearer.

Scott, you young bucks might feel okay in higher flows, but I think the fishing's better at lower flows too.
