Hello All,

Thank you for the posts on carp sightings in the C & O.  I took my seven year old with me down to Lock 7 this morning  (we toyed with the idea of going to Fletcher's but I was a bit worried about the wind and cold temps).  Had three good chances at feeding carp just below the Lock and was able to hook and land two fish - both on McTage's foam trouser worm.  My son helped me fight both of the fish - loved the heavy pull and strong runs - and then was kind enough to take pictures of me holding them!

Thanks again,

Will B

Ha, I leave Friday. She didn't run (phew!).

Looking forward to hearing about more carp and shad escapades when I get back!

Nice, good for you, Will. I fished for carp down there a few times last summer and just couldn't "get" the take and hook-up. I'll keep trying.

"McTage's foam trouser worm" - good thing this is a flyfishing site, elsewhere in polite society such a phrase might draw looks of opprobrium. ;-)

I am looking to hit the canal soon. Never fished it before. Is fishing near the Key Bridge worth it, in Georgetown? How deep is the canal there, is it shallow enough for carp to tail? Great pics, too! Glad to see fishing is beginning to pick up for folks. I look forward to being more active here.

Scott, I've never fished the Georgetown section, but I've heard it is very fishable - particularly around a few of the mulberry trees once that hatch starts (anyone know roughly when mulberry trees start dropping their fruit?). I'd love to hear other people's experiences in that area. What I do know about the other sections (I focus on mainly between lock 7 and 8 with some action between 6 and 7) is the depth (and water clarity) seems to vary fairly significantly. I don't know if there are any sections in Georgetown there that are deep enough to hold the carp, but shallow enough allow them to tail with their tail out of the water, but you will find a few of those areas for sure in the other sections.

I frequently fish the canal from Fletchers up past Chain Bridge. It's a nice bike ride for me. I was out last weekend, in fact. Disclaimer: I'm still a newbie, so your results may vary. There are fish in there, but they tend to be on the small side... although I have seen some fairly large carp and I heard someone else snagged a catfish under one of the bridges. My guess is any bigger fish in the area are probably hanging out on the other side of the canal where all the structure is.

A little further north up the canal, the lock is closed and the water levels beyond are super low. I suspect a lot of the fish in this area are swimming up from the river. I'm not sure if any are permanent residents considering how the water levels go down so much throughout the year. But I definitely could be wrong.

Thanks all for the help. I'll be sure to check it out soon. Anyone know about Royal Lake and the stream that feeds it? Based on Google maps, it looks like near the baseball diamond there would be are in the shallows and possibly upstream into the woods. Any intel? Thanks in advance!

Nice, after shad fishing today I walked the C&O at fletchers looking for carp but nothing doing in both directions for about 500 yards. I'll give Lock 7 a try soon.

Last summer/fall I frequently fished the stretch between Fletchers and Georgetown and found fish through October/November, including when they drained it and it was painfully shallow.

I've been out each weekend for the last four weeks and haven't seen a single fish in that stretch.  Water clarity has been terrible.  I'm going to try the stretch between 6 and 8 when I get a free moment.

I live right by Royal Lake and fish it all the time.  It's great for small bass and bluegill.  The whole thing is pretty shallow and fishable, and there are a half dozen different places to park and access the lake.

The stream has a lot of bluegill and can be a nice hike, I like to use my 3wt or tenkara on it.  Occasionally you can find some good-sized largemouth cruising the stream.
