Hey so I talked to Art about this and I'm going to make it a regular thing!! I'll announce in advance what I'm going to be tying, and anyone who wants to is welcome to tie along, whether that's learning the pattern or doing interesting variations. We'll call it the study group.

For March, I figure there's only one option: shad darts

My recipe for shadness madness (heyo Remick!) is as follows:

Hook - Size 6 - short shank, wide gap is preferable. Like a bonefish hook. I really really like a saltwater hook because they're so strong, but some people might look down their nose at this because it gets expensive. Last year I lost several large, large fish because the hook bent though, so I'm sticking to my guns on this.
Eyes - I tie two different weights, one bead chain and one heavier, so the heavier one will be the lead fly and the lighter one will be on the point.
Body - chenille or anything similar in different colors - if it ain't chartreuse it ain't no use!! (red, pink, orange, whatever else you feel like, would all work - I pretty much only use red and chartreuse).
Tail - I only put white calf tail on my shad darts.

Or, you can always fish a Snowhite Damsel. They slay shad, and bonefish too, as Thomas can attest.

Brilliant!

If you do a parachute Mr Rapidan one night I may have to abandon my table. Wife planning our summer trip to Colorado today and that’s the fly I’m going to need.

We’ll have two LED lamps from now at beer tie so it’ll be much brighter.

Here are some darts I’ve been playing with.

Parachute Mr. Rap is all i tie for brookies now.  Not because it's more effective that the regular twin post mr. rap, but because it's easier to tie :)

Misha, Ill plan on joining for some shad darts

Good stuff! Rob, those look deadly.

For your Colorado trip Rob, you'll also need some Pat's Rubber Legs stonefiles in cat poop brown. What part of CO are you going to? Are you going to fish rivers or impoundments?

I'm interested in learning the Mr. Rapidan. Let's do it for the April study group. What makes a Mr. Rapidan a Mr. Rapidan? My understanding is that it's basically just an Adams in a specific color combo.

Your understanding is pretty much spot on.  It's the color combo, most specifically the yellow calf tail.  It really does help visibility immensely when following your fly through rough water

Misha,
This link https://www.murraysflyshop.com/pages/the-wonderful-mr-rapidan-fly-family will take you to Mr. Murray's website where he describes the materials he used and why.

Jim Misiura has this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qum3DJl92E8 on tying a slight variation of the traditional Mr. Rapidan.

Hope this is useful.

Daniel
