I guess I am missing something. How do you get to Fletcher's Boathouse. Last Sunday it looked like one way traffic when I tried to pull in where my GPS indicated. Where else on the Potomac can I fish from the bank? I am open to any species, but lacking a boat limits what I can get into.

Haha.  I thought this to the first time I went down there.  Depending what time of day your down there, you have to back down into the parking lot.

Yes, Roman, it is crazy...if you approach from Chain Bridge, you are expected to pull over to the right at the entrance and then back down. Drivers backing down the entrance have the right of way, in common practice. If you approach from the Georgetown direction, you can drive down frontwards. Some folks take a circuitous route to do that--look at a map.
Leaving, you must beware of folks entering.  It takes patience and some grace, but it usually works okay.

On the same note, there is at least one freeway on-ramp in the area that is completely unmarked. There used to be three, but two of them have caught up with the modern world.

Depending on traffic restrictions another option is access via MacArthur Blvd down Reservoir Road. You get a better look before you leap. Also the risky uturn is common practice.  No signs that say otherwise.

I usually pull the risky u turn if I am coming from that way.  Another option is to park by chain bridge and walk to fletchers.  This time of year you are probably better off fishing up there anyway.

The bigger question is where else can you fish on the Potomac.  Look at the C&O canal park in MD.  There are several parking spots where you can then walk down to the river.  There may still be the crazy rules about wading, but you can certainly fish from the shore.

Nick.

Although I normally go there to fish the canal for carp, there's some good Potomac access at C&O canal lock 8. there are some pretty clearly marked trails between the C&O canal trail and the Potomac, toward lock 7. Watch out for the poison ivy and stinging nettle; there's a ton of both. (I'm still recovering from a carp/ivy entanglement from a month ago.) If you get it on you, immediately wash off in the Potomac.

If you're going to wade, you're probably way less likely to be warned/cited if you go during the week rather than on the weekend - not that I'm advocating that you wade, of course. Or am I?
