I am planning a two day trip to the Delaware river with my son May 31/June 1st. Most likely I will be camping. Anyone with first hand info on west branch vs east branch vs main stem I would love to hear it. Also any guid recommendations also. Thanks in advance.

Unless you really want to float, I wouldn't bother with a guide.  There aren't really great camping spots close to the river.  I like the flyshop at the delaware river club.   You should be there at the good time as it will be prime bug time.  Maybe even some Drakes if you are lucky.  Sulfurs will be thick.  Expect crowds.

Terry,

You’re in luck.  I consider the Delaware system my home waters and although there are countless other things I miss about being away from NY, this is one of the more endearing reasons.

Right now the entire upper Delaware system is running about 2 weeks behind.  It might catch up my the end of May, but if not, expect March Browns, Gray Fox, olives, and a few terrestrials to be around.

Shoot me an e-mail or call and I’ll give you detailed info on where to go, places to fish, camp, and conditions.

Hi Terry,

I am camping on the Delaware that same weekend. This will be the 20th year - same weekend and campsite - Cedar Rapids. Barryville is on the Mainstem - the fishing is usually fantastic. We do either an 18 mile kayak trip downriver to Mongap or get dropped off up river about 11 miles and take the trip down. There are a ton of campsites in that area. Cedar Rapids is pretty good and right on the river. It also has a bar and resturant on site. This year they have new management and supposedly new kayaks and rafts.

I primarily spin fish but that trip I pretend for at least one day that I can fly fish. There are tons of smallmouth, panfish and that weekend the shad are usually still there and will hold right at the campsite above a decent set of rapids. . I have caught at least one  trout every year except for last year. All the trout I have caught were at the mouth of the feeder creeks that empty into the river.

I have never fished the East or West Branch - but if you are after trout that is where you should probably focus.

As of last year there are some new regulations about river use. If the river is over 6 ft you are not allowed out. Last year we had to wait a few hours because we had a pretty heavy rain the night before. The river moved so fast that we all did the 11 mile trip back to Barryville in less than three hours with very litte paddling and the fishing was horrible.

The National Park Police are insane as well. I have been stopped every year. They have to deal with alot of knuckleheads on the river and really do not cut any slack. PFD's if not worn may  not be obstructed at all. If you have anything over them or have them tied to the boat, raft or kayak you will be ticketed. As we all know they should be worn anyway!

I just purchased my NY 7 day license - for 28.00.  Not sure about the branches but on the Main Stem you can have a PA or NY licesne. I am from The Bronx so I always get a NY Non Resident -  I think it works out cheaper than the PA one - pretty sure in PA you need a trout stamp as well.

Here is a hotline that gives you river height status - 845-252-7100.

If you end up in that area let me know. I will be there early Friday. I am camping with 7-10 guys and only 1 other person fishes.

There are few trout below calicoon.  You can get them, but not where I would go to target them. On the mainstem you generally want to be upstream of hankins. But I would definitely disagree that you want to focus on the branches if you are interested in trout.  Both are very good, but the mainstem has the best fishing for rainbows which in my opinion are the jewel of the system.  Not that there is anything wrong with wild browns, but those rainbows on the mainstem are something else.  Not easy by any means, but they can put you in your backing.  The west branch too crowded for my liking.  The east branch used to have the least pressure due to the fact that most people find it too tough, but that has changed in recent years.  Long Flat has become like cairns pool on the beaverkill.

I am curious where people would suggest for camping.  I have camped at oquaga creek state park and beaverkill campground.  Both are mediocre and not exactly close to the Delaware.

I’ll agree the rainbows are the jewel of the Delaware system, but I like big browns.  I wouldn’t recommend fishing the big river anywhere below Buckingham to anyone looking to fish the system – it’s too big and daunting for first timers.

I recommend both branches down to Bard Parker for folks that are just exploring the river for the first time, particularly the WB.  The rivers are more manageable with a lot of access.  The rivers can get crowded at times (think Hendricksons, Memorial Day & the 4th of July), but you can hike on the river below the mean high water mark and walk as far away from the crowds as you want.

The East Branch is where grown ups go to fish.   ;)

Hey! Rich is definitely the right guy to talk to on this...have received some great advice from him over the years. As a side not, a group of us are going that same weekend so let's hope for some good fish! We always stay at the West Branch Angler & Resort. Give them a call and ask about the price for rooms in the White House / Lodge. These are very reasonable for lodging costs. Good luck!

Awesome... Great choice! I don't think there is a better deal in terms of price and location. Breakfast is good there too. Hopefully we won't be too rowdy! Happy to share some Scotch with you in the evenings. There are about 6 or 7 of us going, so you won't miss us!

Does anyone know a good online source of maps, or list of river accesses and float distances, for the Delaware system?

Also, I've floated both forks and mainstem a couple of times in a drift boat, and I remember plenty of riffles, but I can't recall if there was any real whitewater--class 2+?  I picked up a small raft and added a fishing row frame, but the boat is not really commercial grade and not self-bailing, so I'm trying to avoid taking it on anything with much class 2 or higher.  Let me know if you guys have knowledge or recollections on that.

Joe -

NY ENCON is an excellent resource for public access maps.  See below link under Delaware County: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/44854.html

Hope this helps.

Best book I’ve seen is Fly-Fishing Guide To TheUpper Delaware by Paul Weamer.

It lists spots, maps, distances, hatches, and pool by pool descriptions.

No major rapids on the main stem or west branch under normal flows.
