Let's see if I can attach a photo.
I took this picture at the Maryland Great Falls overlook yesterday.


Looks like shad are still around and make it all the way up to Great Falls. Unless my ID is wrong.

Based on the size, color and upright dorsal fin, that is a gizzard shad.

gold/brown color more like sucker -

To me it was just an awfully big fish for a GBH to be trying to eat.  It was just fun to watch the standoff. 

The bird in possession of the fish flew off and a few others tried to follow.  The fish flopped off his beak and he was then able to defend himself a bit better.  I think the fish was weighing him down.

I doubt it was a sucker.  That shape is streamlined and the forked rear tail looked like a fish built for speed.
