After a few years of doing a standalone event to support the Walter Reed Chapter of Project Healing Waters, we've decided to incorporate this within a Beer Tie. The next Beer Tie is Monday, April 10, in the Sandbar at Whitlow's on Wilson, doors open at 6PM (but we're trying to open earlier--I'll keep you posted) and we'll be around until 10PMish.

If you aren't familiar, Project Healing Waters ("PHW") is an organization that uses fly fishing as mental and physical rehabilitation for our wounded veterans. There is a chapter at many Veterans Administration hospitals, including the nearby Walter Reed. PHW takes these veterans fishing regularly and needs to provide them with flies, which is where we come in. We're asking for people to bring their vises and donate all the flies you can tie to the Walter Reed chapter.

The group primarily fishes private trout streams and some local places for bass. In the past, the best flies have been those that are easy to see, cast, and tie on. This would include larger nymphs (prince, hare's ear, copper john), attractor dries (royal wulff, stimulator, adams, etc.) and small streamers (wooly bugger, muddler minnow). Any fly donation would obviously be appreciated.

We will also be holding a raffle for PHW and need some items to be donated. I am kicking in a Lamiglas Fiberglass 7'6" 4wt rod, and I have a boatload of high quality books donated by Orvis in Tysons and Arlington. If you have any other gear you'd like to provide, post here or let me know. These funds can help pay for more equipment and fishing trips for our vets.

If you can't make it to the Fly Tie-A-Thon, the local Orvis stores have agreed to collect flies for us. Stop by Orvis in Bethesda, Arlington, or Tysons to donate any flies if you can't make it out and want to contribute.

Just gave a bunch of books to PHW last weekend. I'll do some decluttering to find some for the next Beer Tie. I might have some materials too - I'll let you know.

Our Project Healing Waters Fly Tie-A-Thon is coming up at next Monday's Beer Tie. We got Whitlow's to open the doors at 5PM for us, because this is more convenient for the PHW volunteers and participants.

As a reminder, if you can't make it, drop any flies you want to donate to PHW Walter Reed at the Arlington, Bethesda and Tysons Orvis stores.

For fundraising, we have two rods, a reel, and some books for the raffle so far--all proceeds will be donated to PHW. We also ordered some new TPFR stickers, and will give these away with the purchase of raffle tickets, and we separately have hats in stock and for sale again at Beer Ties now.

Look forward to seeing you all next week and thanks for all your generosity to PHW.

Heyo, So what is the rundown for this Tie-A-Thon?  Which flies should we tie?  Numbers?  I presume our own supplies?  Asking...for a friends.

Hi Greg,

PHW typically takes the veterans fishing on private trout streams, but they also occasionally fish for bass and on public water as well. With these private streams, the fish probably aren't too picky and will eat your basic, larger attractor patterns, including dries like Adams, Stimulators, Royal Wulffs, Patriots, etc. and nymphs like Princes, Hares Ears, Green Weenies, Copper Johns, etc. They might also occasionally fish small streamers like Wooly Buggers, Black Nosed Dace, or others. The key is flies that are easy to see, tie on, and cast, as the participants may not have the greatest dexterity with their injuries but fly fishing is helping them with this. Easy to tie patterns would also be great, so we can provide them with more flies

We may have a few materials to bring, but generally you should bring your own materials and equipment.

Flies that are easy to see, barbless, and have large hook eyes.

I won't be able to make it on Monday. I created a new shad fly and Dalton has the materials- from Lotte, the international grocer (Braddock road x 495)

I'm out as well,  moved furniture over the weekend  and my back is barking.  Should have known better.  :(

Trent was quite stellar in his role as carnival barker for the raffle. ☺ I especially liked how he enunciated the rule, "If you win ONE book you HAVE to take THREE!"

Thanks for coming out and showing all of the generosity to Project Healing Waters last night. We raised over $350 and gave them several dozen flies.
