Hi Brad.  The WV gold rush is scheduled for the end of March, beginning of April.  Here is the link:

I fished the Smoke Hole section of the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac during the Gold Rush two years ago and it was very productive.  That water is not far from Canaan Valley.  You also might consider a short stay at Harman's Lodge, also nearby, for private trout fishing.

The Ernie Nester Chapter of Trout Unlimited Guide to the Catch and Release Trout Stream of West Virginia lists these streams in the Canaan Valley area:

Blackwater River, Blackwater Falls State Park.

North Branch of Potomac River downstream of Jennings Randolph Lake is not too far away

Red Run of Dry Fork is not too far away

Seneca Creek looks to be in the general area
