Tied up some chartreusse gurglers last night and decided to test them out today. I took a trip to Martin luther king recreational park and fished the lake. Lots of grass and weed would've been a nightmare for anyone with sinking line or subsurface streamers.

I was armed with gurglers and on a mission to catch my first fish on a top water fly. I paid attention to the Lilly pads and was able to successfully land casts between them or right before them. It took some time understanding how to work the fly.

After a few blip blip burrrps I was hooked up with a bass who burst out and took my fly. I set the hook, however he thrashed and out came the gurgler.

I kept at it and eventually landed this smaller largemouth.

Nice man!  I've yet to land a fish on a gurgler (just tied some up a few weeks back), but love catching fish on poppers.  There's really nothing like a bass crushing a topwater fly.

I found a nice pattern for tying a weedless gurgler.  Essentially just tie in some mono to loop from back of hook to eye and protect the hook.   Will be trying it end of the month.
