to Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders
Thinking about fishing the Rose at and above the trail head this Sunday. Any advice, hints, flies, technique would be appreciated.

Be careful about bears. I walked up on a huge one right next to the main trail there 3 weeks ago.

How was the fishing. Was it catch and release or catch and throw (to the bear)?

Fishing was good. I actually got a few big wild browns. Just fish hopper droppers and you'll be fine.

A friend and I hit the Rose River yesterday. We hiked in from the trailhead. Turned out to be a beautiful day but the River was really flowing. Hard to find a pool, but we did and caught some beautiful wild Brookies. One around 9-10". The other two were the typical 6-7". Forget my net so I couldn't get any fish fotos. The picture below will give you an idea of flow.

Never fished the Rose before, does it pay to spend 35- 1 hour hiking up the trail to get into the really productive water then fish? Or can you start casting a bit up from the trailhead?

I was using #16 flashback pheasant tail nymphs with no indicator, But the flows were really fast. Flow should be much slower. So maybe a dry with the nymph dropper. I understand the rainbow warrior nymph is killer. You could probably start at the trailhead and work your way up. With lower flows more pools should be evident. A did catch a 9-10" brookie about a mile up from the trailhead.

Planning to stop by Murray's before going up the mountains - want to be on those waters aronud 1 pm - and he's got a great selection of patterns for the brook trout.
Did you come across any browns? Ashley mentioned he had caught a few, but I was under the impression browns were rare in the SNP due to its regulations..

They were the first and only SNP brownies I've caught. I got one on a stimulator and can't remember what nymphs I got the others on. If you really want to slay, use a hopper double dropper setup with one realistic (e.g., beadhead PT) and one attractor fly

couldn't say the distance - but about 45 minutes past the bridge.
Rose is easily my favorite brookie stream now. Those fish really gave me a thrill on a 3 wt. Got action in every other hole.

Wife got me an early birthday/fathers day present. Tenkara rod. I was vacillating between a 3wt and a Tenkara. A 20% off sale sealed the deal. Can't wait to try it out on the Rose!
