Is Roaches Run near DCA worth fishing?  Is it impacted by tide flow?  How easy to launch a kayak here?

on a separate note, I bought a 1wt, 6ft rod on ebay which is fantastic for bluegills with a hopper/dropper setup.  I was fishing away at a local lake, and had caught a ton of panfish (couple of doubles) when something grabbed by nymph and started dragging my kayak out toward the center of the lake.  I thought the rod was going to explode at any minute, but after 15 minutes of very strong fighting,  I pulled in a 6-7 pound catfish that went right back in.

Yes, Roaches Run is worth fishing and it's fairly easy to launch a kayak, at least it always has been. It IS impacted by tides. In fact, the flow of water through the tunnel under GW Parkway (connecting Roaches Run to Gravelly Point) switches direction, depending on if the tide is coming in or going out. There is an unmaintained soft launch at the north end of the parking lot.

You can find largemouth bass, carp, catfish, snakeheads, bluegill, crappie, yellow perch, gar and more there. Have fun! And share some photos of what you catch!

Thanks, Scott.  Is it better at high or low tide?  how impacted is the water clarity by the Potomac?

It's rare for it to be clear - in the dozen or so times that I've fished it, I think only one or twice has it been clear water. It's mostly brown with very little visibility. If you're fishing around the connection to Gravelly Point, I prefer an incoming tide. As for the rest of the pond, I'm not sure it matters. Launching/Landing your boat will definitely be easiest at high tide, that much I know.

followup Q: how possible is it to wade/fish from shore there? Haven't been in years...

The south end of it used to be fairly wadeable, but I haven't tried in several years. I imagine that it's still possible to get in the water and fish the water coming in from Gravelly Point.

I can't say whether or not it's legal, though. Not sure.

good to know, I might be going to Alexandria tomorrow and maybe i'll make a pit stop. Be a nice break from fishing Rock Creek while yet more while I'm in Chevy Chase and catching yet more chubs.

Search the forum for wading discussions. Don’t go through the tunnel in your boat. It’s full of spider webs. Cold water where roaches stream enters. Hot water where pentagon effluent enters.
