Sooo....there's a chance that I might be in Patagonia with my wife and her family sometime around late February or March of next year. Plans are still very fluid, but it sounds like we could be traveling between Santiago and Buenos Aires over a 2-week period.

If this ends up happening, 4-6 of us would like to spend a few days (like 2-3 days) fishing. Does anyone have experience with guides in that general area? A lot of the lodges that we've looked at require a week stay (and are outrageously expensive). Ideally we'd like to just hire a guide or two (depending on how many folks want to fish) to take us out for the day.

Another option would be to go full DIY - has anyone done that?

Thanks, in advance.

I was just down there myself, and unfortunately I was unable to fish because the weather conspired against me.  However, the guide I settled on and booked after some research was Tres Rios Fishing Lodge just outside of Puerto Varas.  He's an American who has lived in Chile for a long time and didn't ask for a deposit in advance (and therefore keep my money for no services), but there is a run of king salmon in the Rio Petrohue as well as big browns.  Another guy that is down there is Jack Trout, but if you do research on him on the internet, it sounds like some people have been burned by his associates in Chile.   Hope that helps.

Oh, man the Jack Trout name just set off alarm bells. I booked a flats trip in Belize through him on my honeymoon a couple years ago. His local guide was good, but after the trip kept trying to get me to pay cash after I'd put down a credit card for the trip over the phone with Trout (I still was tipping in cash), even tried to get me to go to an ATM. It was an odd situation at best.

Yea,
I chose to not book him because there seem to be more than one story like this.  It seems like he is really hit or miss.

When I went to Patagonia a few years ago I fished out of Paloma River Lodge.  It is the least expensive lodge that I found in Patagonia and was a great value in my opinion.  When I was there it was just me and one other guy staying there so they may be willing to accept a party for less than a week.  Most of the fishing was on the paloma river with most fish being browns in the 15-17 inch range but I did get a fish that was just over 23".  We also spend a couple days fishing lakes which was actually a lot of fun as it is all dry fly fishing to sited fish.  I will mention that the head guide (Fernando (Fena) Vargas) is now at cinco rios so can't comment on the quality of guides they have now, but he was very, very good.  Not sure if Cinco Rios does less than one week trips...

I honestly would not recommend DIY unless you are a regular visitor to Chile or just want to be able to say you fished there.  The best way to fish those rivers is to float them and while you may be able to get access to some of them at Bridge crossings, the odds that the fishing will be very good in those areas is relatively low.  There are some road accessible streams where you can fish for small fish but if you are all the way down there I would just spend the money and do it right.

You are going to want HUGE black beetle patterns.  I caught almost all of my fish on those.

Also, there used to be a flyshop in  Coyahaique that I am guessing has guides that do day trips.  No idea if they are still open as it was 2014 when I was down there.

Depending on how much time you have the areas around San Martin de los Andes and Junin de Los Andes offer some potential options. You can have decent DIY fishing on the CHimehuin River or the Malleo River near Estancia San Huberto as well as the mOuth of the Chimehuin. The access was actually fairly good. I spent some time down there many years ago and had great fishing even though I was too poor to afford a decent guide or stay in the lodges. You would need to do some research though to make sure these options are still viable today.

Look into Andes Drifters. Went down a couple of years ago. Our travel was messed up on both ends of the trip. Coming in they had several back up plans in place before we landed and had to connect in Buenos Aires. And they had a representative stay with us just in case we had problem leaving Bariloche. While we were in the San Martin area everything was first class treatment. Guides were very professional and got us on good water everyday. Well worth the effort in checking them out.

Bobby, several years ago I fished the Rio Petrohue with Tres Rio Lodge, and yes, they do have very large King Salmon there. In the two days I fished the Petrhue I hooked, and lost, 8 very large kings. I went there to fish for brown trout and was not aware they had salmon so I did not the right setup. Since I went primarily to float for the browns we only spent about 2 hours each day targeting the salmon. I also spent one day fishing the nearby Maullin River which also a great trout river but entirely different character from the Petrhue.

John and Teresa Joy are the owners of Tres Rio Lodge and are great hosts. If you go ask if Edgar Simpendorfer is still guiding for them. I fished with him the three days there and can recommend him as a knowledgeable hardworking guide.
