I’m heading down to Jazz Fest at the end of the month and was looking to chase some Reds. I was planning on simply hiring a guide. Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations?

Thanks,

Marek

I go down there quite frequently for the reds (and everything else Nola has to offer). My main guide is Captain Greg Moon (Louisiana Fly Fishing Charters). If he's not available, my next choice is Rocky Thickstun (Salty Fly Louisiana). The only other guide that I'm familiar enough with to give a recommendation (haven't used, but comes recommended from the other two guides) is Lucas Bisset (Low Tide Charters). They're extremely heavily booked around during Carnival season - particularly if it's right before, after, or during one of the major ones - so definitely try to get something set now before it's too late. My biggest recommendation is avoid a "Florida guide." They'll likely all be focusing on Tarpon at this point, but there's a growing contingency of guides coming over for a few weeks or months of the year to guide for the bull redfish. Generally, they do not know the water at all. You'll also often find them following one of the "good" redfish guides and fishing on top of them, despite there being tens of thousands of acres of extremely productive water. That means they're likely either guiding you on water that's already been fished, water that's not as good as right nearby (hence why the local guides aren't fishing there), or they're fishing it the wrong way and pushing fish off the flats for the other fisherman.

Very helpful, thanks. My independent searches (Google) came up with your top two suggestions.

Thanks!

You might also give Rob Lepczyk at Great Feathers Fly Shop near Baltimore a call.  He took a trip down there late last year and blogged about it.  I'm sure he would provide the name of the guide he used.

I spent a few weeks there in January and hooked up with Capt. Gjuro Bruer who came over to meet me in Gulfport.  Second time fishing with him, awesome guide, great boat, VERY safe and accommodating.  He's fished all over and is great, but since it's just myself I was looking for a great waterman as well.  Found him through fellow guide Hannah Belford (BC steelhead) and always try and get guides to recommend guides when I can.  Contact info below.
