Was thinking about heading up to Maryland to trout fish this weekend. I've fished VA pretty heavily but never been into Maryland. Just based off a little research and talking to buddies was thinking about Friends Creek or Big Hunting Creek.

Anyone got any experience/ suggestions for a MD novice?

Thanks

Not particularly familiar with either of those two rivers, but I love the Gunpowder. I have done a fairly minimal amount of fishing for trout in rivers, and I've generally done well there.

I've always been told to worry about crowds on the gunpowder, is that unfounded?

I have fairly limited experience there so take this for what you will, but the first time I went, I saw one person. The second time, it was elbow to elbow. The most recent time, I saw maybe 6 or 7 other anglers over 10 hours and about 1.5 miles of river, so it wasn't empty, but not enough people to make me feel like I was limited in fishing territory. The elbow-elbow trip was an unseasonably warm weekend after Thanksgiving, while the other two were nice, random fall days.

Do you have a place you particularly like to start out?

Two of my visits were from the Masemore Rd access point and work upstream until the Falls Rd bridge. Those were both of the less crowded trips, and I had the most success in that stretch. I accesses once from the Falls Rd access point (which is further above the bridge), and that's where I found the elbow to elbow conditions and also got skunked (had one follow on a streamer, but it was also later in the season so not quite apples to apples).

I won't fish the Gunpowder on a weekend. I don't have the patience for city morons stomping through your holes.

But to be fair, I don't fish anywhere on the East Coast on a weekend if I can avoid it.

I second Jeff's comment.

If you won't mind to drive extra hour and extra stays, Savage river is in western MD and several good rivers near by it. I have a book "Guide to Maryland Trout Fishing" by Charlie Gelso & Larry Coburn (8 or 9 dollars for used book I got). It has rich information, map with park lots, trails, etc. It is BIG plus and I read/use it all time. You can order it on Amazon. Sometime Orvis stores sells it.

Last I knew, Larry Coburn was the manager of the White River Fly shop in Outdoor World (Bass Pro) at Arundel Mills. Beware if you drive out there: you'll have to deal with the traffic and parking that goes with the Maryland Live casino. 'Tis a mess.

Unless he changed is mind I'm pretty sure he has retired from that.

Personally, I enjoy the Gunpowder river.  The browns there are on the smaller scale and are not easily convinced, which can provide for a very challenging yet rewarding experience since the fish are wild.

There's alot of water to fish and ground to cover so if on a particular day you feel the water is too "pressured" you can always find a spot away from other anglers if you're up for it.  Most times I've fished there I've hardly seen anyone else on the water.

The worst are the kayakers and people who play fetch with their dogs.  The dogs swimming in and spooking fish while you're fishing a hole or a run.

Larry lives April-November near the Salmon River in New York off a dirt road in a cabin he built.

It looks over salmon and steelhead spawning gravel !

He'll be back in town once the snow starts up there and his road isn't drive able. Not much of a bass pro employee anymore
