Spent about three hours at Fletchers this morning. With the cooler weather, the bite was definitely off. Managed two on orange shad darts and one on an orange clouser. Also found two of these weird things on consecutive casts. They were about 24 inches long and pushing 7-8 lbs. It was a lot of fish for my five weight!

Any ideas what these are?

They appear to be… judging from the confused look… independent voters? I didn’t think they’d be out in numbers until late August at the earliest.

That's a quillback carp.  A nice catch - you can jig them up on the Virginia side across from Fletchers.

This appears to be a quillback carpsucker but I would need to see the dorsal fin to be certain. We call them quillback carp or just quillback at Fletcher's.

Wow quillback on back to back casts.  I caught one last year near the mouth of the cove.  Will have the try the suggestion to target them on the VA side.
