I'm coming up to DC for a friend's wedding, and I'm planning on doing some fishing while I'm up there. I was wondering if y'all could give me some feedback on my itinerary? Also, if anybody wants to join me for a bit, please feel free to shoot me a private email!

My flight from Miami lands at DCA at 9:30 a.m. on 10/28. I was thinking I'd walk out of the airport to Gravelly Point and fish the incoming tide. After a couple hours of that, I'll walk or Uber to the Tidal Basin and start fishing that. I may get called away to have a beer with a friend. At around 4 p.m., I'll Uber into Arlington and do the whole wedding thing. After the wedding and partying and all that (maybe 1 or 2 a.m.), I'll head back to the Tidal Basin to fish it at night. At around 4 a.m., I'll Uber back to DCA to get on my 6 a.m. flight back to Miami.

Does this make sense? Is this a doable itinerary? Anybody see any issues with it? If there's a gear question, I'll have a 9' 6wt with me, along with pre-spooled WFF and sink tip lines.

Fish the incoming tide at Tidal Basin instead of Gravelly.

You want to fish gravelly on an outgoing tide but I can't imagine wanting to spend more than an hour or two at the tidal basin.

Good to know. I'm easily entertained, so I could probably stretch that for 3-4 hours. But maybe, in that case, I'll also plan a trip to the Constitutional Gardens lake.

I'd go to Fletchers and rent a boat for a couple hours instead.

Or Thompsons Boat House - rent a kayak, and fish the area around where Rock Creek enters the Potomac, plus the area around Roosevelt Island.

Anyone seen Const. Gardens lately? Last I saw it was algaed over, but that was at least a month ago. Could be clear by now.

If fishing the Tidal Basin at night, I like a big black lech that sinks slowly, is either unweighted or clouser-rigged to avoid snags, and pushes some water with a slow strip. You may run into some monstrous cats and nice bass. Important to note that this isn't applicable for the inflow on an incoming, but just in general around back corners and such.

What kind of flies do you guys recommend using in those locations (Roosevelt Island, Gravelly, and the Tidal Basin)?

Gravelly - Baitfish imitations I pretty much just use clousers.  Tidal basin - Wooly buggers or clousers.  Nymphs depending on what your want to catch.    Roosevelt Island - Never fished there but guessing the same flies would work.

Yep, that's pretty much what I'm bringing. Also got some lefty deceivers (they tend to turn the LMB on down here in FL). Couple poppers and foam flies. Little smorgasbord of stuff. I'll put up a trip report here once I get back in Miami.

Sunday is shaping up to have some low pressure and precip which is forming off Belize right now. Should be some nasty weather which the fall stripers like.

Well guys, I'm settled back in Miami and finished up my article. I had a great time fishing the Tidal Basin, even though it seemed like the bite was turned off by the incoming storm front. I got a bluegill and a yellow perch (my first) early in the morning on Saturday, then feel a bite or see a fish the rest of the day. From what I could tell from other anglers, nobody else was catching either. Despite that, it's still incredible to be able to throw lines in the shadow of the Washington Monument. I was also blown away by all the neat water I saw on my approach into Reagan airport. I'll definitely be back in the spring for the shad run. If any of y'all come down to South FL, feel free to drop me a line. The peacock bass fishing is great right now.

Sorry your trip was not more productive, but glad you had a good time. I am originally from Miami, my parents still live in the house I grew up in on the C-100 canal near The Falls shopping center. I always get a little time in fishing for peacocks when I get home. The fishing can be pretty good up here, I got a few stripers last Friday at gravelly and the shad run is a must try.

Sweet! I actually was at the falls a couple weeks before my trip to DC. Still great peacock bass fishing. Been seeing a fair amount of largemouth as well. And yeah, I'm pretty sold on the idea of coming back for the shad run.
