The hickory shad season has begun at Fletcher's. Here's our first Shad Report of the year with details.

Alex took the prize on Friday evening, but we'd still like to find out who gets the first fly rod fish (probably today) and the first American shad.

Yesterday, Kevin Eichinger landed the first Hickory Shad on the fly. He was using a tournament winning shad fly. He spilled his Guinness on a gold fly and cast it in the river while singing a little Irish Diddy. He was awarded with an 18 1/2 inch Hickory!

May the luck of the Irish be with you!

I guess since I wasn't first I'm last.  But  I was within about 15 feet of landing one at 10:30ish.    It made a nice jump but lost it near the boat.  Then low tide rolled in.  I did get a few to the net starting about 2pm.  It was a beautiful day and great to be out there!

Hicks is trying to be nice here. Although that was landed that morning, it was actually him who caught the first Shad on the fly. He hooked up with the hickory the same time a cat rod got taken. First kind of double of the year!

Has anyone heard about how the Rappahanock is doing in Fredricksburg as far as Shad? I don’t know if it’s usually ahead of Fletchers or later?

Aaron,
Sometime within the last week, I did see a post saying some Hickory Shad have been caught on the Rappahannock. If I remember correctly they mentioned it was right around the Route 1 Bridge in Fredericksburg .

River is smoked that's for sure. Going to be awhile before there is any fishing.
