I spent an rainy Saturday antiquing (junk shopping) and bought the rod and reel pictured. The rod says "Orvis" but looks like it's hand lettered along with "Ruby Eye." I read somewhere online (so it must be true) that Orvis made bamboo kits way back and people would also name the rod. I'm skeptical that this is the case with this rod. It's 8', probably a six weight, and very slow, which is not a surprise. It's missing a few guides.

What I'm more curious about is the reel made by G.W. Gayle and Son of Frankfort, KY. It looks like a Simplicity#3 but without the model stamped on it. 1920's vintage I think. The only markings are the Mfr and location.

Anybody have any thoughts on these two items other than, "It would cool hanging on the wall." ?

Hell, fix 'em up and fish with them.

Both reel and rod would probably be known there, or at least a good guess.  The reel is interesting.  I like the rod.  Is the tip section full length?

It looks neat.  Orvis has use Impregnated blanks for at least 50 years, so they hold up really well (and are a bit heavier).  Let us know what you find out.

Carl, Thanks for the advice. I will check the forum out. The tip section is full length and has a slight bend. The rod is heavy, particularly when matched up with a light reel.

That's why you match bamboo rods with heavier reels than you use with graphite. When you do balance out a good bamboo rod with the appropriate reel, while still heavy compared to graphite, the casting is suprisingly easy, throwing a long line is less work and it's not as tiring as you think it would be with such a " heavy" outfit.

First I have wrap in 4 guides and rewrap the others. Anybody know a good source for the guides? What's the best material for wrapping?

Mudhole is a good source of guides and nylon/polyester thread, and there is always silk as an option.

I have nothing against mudhole other than their shipping charges are high, but they have the nicest website with lots of good info.

For a bamboo rod, I would use silk.  YLI 100 is nice and can be found at a local quilting shop or at a rod building supply.  Capital Quilts in Rockville carries it.  I do get funny looks going into the quilting shop, but its better there then in the yarn aisle at Jo Ann's Fabric. :-)

Hook & Hackle and Utmost Enterprises are other places to get supplies.
