It’s just me and my son this weekend. He wants to go fishing. Where’s a good place to take him so he can catch a fish this time of year? The last two times we’ve been out, we haven’t caught anything and I think he’s getting discouraged. Thanks!

Cheers,
Patrick

P.S. - We’re in Logan Circle, but we do have the car for the weekend.

Worms and bobbers on Cook Lake in Alexandria might do it.   Or try for catfish in the Tidal Basin.

Don't let him get too discouraged before the shad run starts!

So...I am learning the hard way but let me suggests the cheats:

1. Make it fun fun fun time, which means playground time, ice cream, etc. This is an investment in who could be the greatest fishing partner in the future
2. Watch the temp, I froze my son on 4 mile on a sunny but cold day in January. He never wanted to go back despite having a nice cast.
3. Having everything rigged up and ready to go, kids are bursting with excitement and nothing is more painful for them is watching you tie blood knots.
4. Anytime outdoors for the next gen is a win!

I'd look for local/neighborhood ponds that hold blue gill and fish for them with little nymph's under a bobber. We have a bunch of ponds out in Fairfax that all hold tiny Gillies that will eat in the afternoon on a warm day.

The advice about making a day of it is spot on.

Thank you guys for all the advice and the suggestions! This is great (along with the video).  My goal is to keep him interested until the Shad run when I know I can get him on a fish.

wait until spring.  Once the water starts warming up, it will be good, but now, it's cold and the fish aren't active.
