Congrats on the first reported Hshad of the year!  You managed what 2 anglers, 7 cormorants, 1 eagle and Rodeny the well traveled osprey could not. Looking at that rock and the reflection I'm guessing you were not far from a bridge!

I've been tracking the first hickory shad catch in the NCC-TU Shad Report for many years.  I'd like to give you credit and need a little more info, like where and when.  It figures today's warmth would help.  BTW, the prize for the first shad is no prize, just bragging rights.  Now, the race continues for the first American shad.

On a spey rod, no less.

You sure one of the Binsteds hasn’t been keeping the first fish catch a secret this year?   ;)

Oh most merciful Heaven.  It has begun!!!

Now hopefully I can get through this run with all of my shoulders properly in their sockets.

I'm going to guess the Rappahannock.

Ditto Rappahanock.
congrats for such an early fly rod shad!
So I'm waiting for, and trying for, the first Fletcher's shad if this one wasn't it.

Sorry to leave you guys hanging. Yes that's from the Rapp. She was running at perfect level and color so I had to try. My earliest shadin last years was April 2 and really thought it would be more casting practice than fishing. I just hope this cold rain doesn't mess it up for a while.

I got three fish, but I saw all of the strikes just as I felt them. I've noticed this before in the past, but generally late in the season when it's really warm. Do you think these first active fish were holding higher in the water column or were they way below my fly, shot upward, and I saw the flash just as they took the fly? I'm leaning towards the latter.

Mark, is that data available or is that private? Sorry this guy won't count for the first potomac fish, but it should be any day now.

That rod is a 5wt batson switch with a 285 super short skagit. I had about 8feet of t9 type tip. That's been the perfect setup for me in the rapp.

Dan, thanks for clearing this up and for sharing the beautiful photo.  Shad are working their way north with the weather--David Policansky just emailed yesterday that the Roanoke River in NC is "loaded with hickories."  Any day now for the Potomac.

Mike, Bob, Dalton, Alex, et. al. can relax and keep trying for number one.  I know I will.  We might have to bring in Price Waterhouse to certify the results.

I'd still like to use your photo; is that OK?  The NCC-TU Shad Report is available to anyone by email.  Send your address to con...@ncc-tu.org, with "SHAD" in the subject line or contact me.  We are well over 1000 subscribers now.

Terry,
What odds?  It's hard to bet against Alex.
