Hi Guys

I am new to this area and have no idea what fishing licenses are required in the Potomac.  I have looked at a number of websites, but since I don't know any of the locations it is difficult to get a clear picture of which license are needed.    I am going on a group outing with Mark Kovach this next week and have tried to contact him but have not heard back.  Just wondering is anyone in the group can help me out.  Thanks.  David

Where do you live? D.C. MD or VA? What type of fishing will you be doing?

Virginia: https://license.gooutdoorsvirginia.com/

MD: https://compass.dnr.maryland.gov/DnrCompassPortal

D.C.: https://doee.dc.gov/service/get-fishing-license

WV: http://www.wvdnr.gov/fishing/license.shtm

VA and MD have reciprocal agreements for the Potomac. D.C. Requires a license regardless.

If you are fishing with Mark or one of his guides on the Potomac,  a MD license will cover you.   There is some reciprocity on the potomac, but the south side of the river up there changes from WV to VA, so the MD license gets it all.  It also will allow you to fish the C&O canal.

Would I not be able to fish, say, Widewater of the C&O Canal with a Virginia license? Is a Maryland license required to fish the C&O above DC? Thanks.

I had sort of assumed the Potomac VA & MD reciprocity would cover the C&O above the city. Probably a bad assumption!

The C&O canal and any feeder streams require an MD license.  MD and Virginia have reciprocity in the Potomac.  MD and WV have Reciprocity on the Potomac where it is the boundary.

If I recall correctly, DC and Virginia do not have reciprocity.  In addition the mouth of a stream is further out than you often think.  I believe VA was getting people for fishing the mouth of the creek at Gravelly Point a while back.
