Hi all,

I have not yet been to Gunpowder but planning to drive there this Saturday morning. Just curious if anybody has been recently with any luck fishin?

But mainly reaching out to get recommendations on where to park/start fishing?  Planning to wet wade and hike/walk alongside the river.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jimmy

Jimmy,
District Angling has A Guide to Day Trips with a ton of information on streams, typical bugs, and parking.

There are a bunch of places to park and fish the Gunpowder River. Considering general water temperatures, one place to park is where Falls Road crosses the Gunpowder. This is the closest parking to the reservoir dam.

Others should know of other parking options.

Daniel

Be sure to check the USGS water flow before you go.

My preferred parking/start off point is at the Masemore Road Bridge and fish both upstream and downstream of the Bridge.

The vegetation along the Masemore Water Trail is pretty thick this time of year.  Take a machete!

Great thing about the USGS gage is it also shows the water temperature. If water is coming over the top of the dam, which sometimes happens after large floods like what we experienced today, the water temp can spike into the upper 70's. With that said if there's that much water it is going to be too high and muddy to fish anyway. But it's always a good idea to look at the water temp before going. I wish more gages were that useful.

I haven't managed to find the Guide to Day Trips on their website; could you provide a link?

THanks.

Barracuda,
It was the first book on the left when I copied the link.

Full title of the book is Washington DC Area Trout Fishing, A Guide to Day Trips. It covers 31 streams scattered about Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

You can purchase a copy at District Angling on Lee Hwy in Arlington.  Or send a check for $35 to the PO Box on the site requesting a copy.
