I'm headed down to the Homestead for a few days.  Has anyone fished that area before, would love to get any info.  thanks

I have; I can recommend a colorful character named Jason in the area who can guide on private water on the Jackson River. Big, beautiful rainbows and brownies. Email me offline if you’re interested.

By the way: “[Landowners] claim to possess a Crown Grant—a deed to the land (and environs) issued by King George III of Great Britain in 1743—which [landowners] suggest supersedes state ownership because their land was conveyed prior to a law passed by the Virginia legislature in the 1800s that conveyed all river bottoms to the state that were not already privately owned. Part of the basis for their claim is the Virginia Supreme Court’s 1996 Kraft v Burr decision, which barred anglers from touching bottom or fishing in the Jackson River from just below Gathright Dam to Johnson Springs because the owners of that section possessed a Crown Grant to the property...”

When are you going?   Right now the water is high in that area and the best bet is mountain streams for brookies.  

The James and its tributaries are running high.   Lower part of the Jackson is controlled by Gathright Dam and generally clears up quicker.   Getting a guide for a day would probably be worthwhile

The upper and lower Jackson are nearby, but running high for now. If the flows drop below 600, you can wade below the dam and at a few of the boat ramps just downstream.   Here are two pages for flows in that area.   Back Creek is another option too.

I'm also heading to the Jackson this weekend. thinking it could be a bust, but need to get outta DC. 

Probably going to camp, if we dont get rained out, at the hidden valley campground or on national forest land. Does anyone have recommendations for the upper, or any creeks up river if the Jackson is blown out?

Jackson has always treated me well. Mark at http://www.fishingwithfly.com/ is a guide i have used before. Great guy. But there are limited number handful of wading spots, not a ton. But i have never seen anyone the times Ive been there. The gorge on Bull Pasture is near by, hell of a wade/hike getting up into it but it use to have a lot of browns. Been a few years.

If I can find the guys number, there was another guide i tried once. I would never guide with him again, but if you stay at one of his houses. You have access points at 3 or 4 areas near all his houses. Caught fish at all spots and just waded alone. House wasnt to badly priced and very clean.
