Hey -- just fished from dark-to-fairly dark with Beth and did very well with the early season brook trout.  We didn't know how it would go, but figured hiking and recon is always good if nothing else.  Beth actually destroyed them in a couple of pools so much that I stopped fishing so I could 'man the net', which I'm always willing to do to ensure she remains a fishing buddy ;).

Stoneflies were hatching all over the place, especially on the shaded edges of large rocks and along the bank.

I took the bizarre approach of trying to catch fish in the very shallow pools that most anglers would probably walk right by and not think twice about.  I get a kick out of that for some reason.  Surprisingly, most of these hold fish for the taking -- today I had good luck drifting a stewart spider under a dry fly, sometimes in just 10" of water.

We had a wonderful day!  Get out and fish 'em -- they cooperated with us today, so imagine it's just getting better from here.

(pics upload later-- too exhausted and dirty)

Gene

Gene, I went down to the Conway river yesterday for the same purpose, had a good day but I couldn't keep the browns away. Nice fish in the 8-10 in. Range. Plan on getting out end of the week after I shovel snow again on Monday. Hope it's the last time this year.

We thought about the Conway at one point yesterday, and did end up eating at some hole-in-the-wall in Madison..but didn't hit it.  Glad to hear it produced for you as well.  I'm sure ANY of the streams out there would be productive now -- you really don't have any bad choices in the park.

Glad to hear you were able to get out and take advantage of the great weather! I was hoping to get out in the park yesterday too but had other obligations. Those are some nice brookies! Can't wait to get out there!

Most of the brown trout were around 10" a few smaller a few 12". They took stonefly & bead head P.T. Nymphs and Mr. Rapidan dry's size 14. I think if I hiked farther up I would have gotten into the brookies.

Hey Gene, I was planning on heading out for some brrokies this weekend. Do you mind me asking what river you and Beth were fishing and proximity?

Thanks,

Scott

I'm going to be in Charlottesville this weekend and have Saturday free for fishing. I'm guessing the Rivana River is my best bet but am looking for options having never fished that area.

HELP!

I haven't fished the Rivana in like a year or so.  From my last experience, I would not recommend you waste any time on that river.

How about the Mormons? north or south fork?

ive heard good things about the north fork.  But my parents are up in Front Royal. So I dont normally drive down that far for brookies.  The rivers I have about memorized are the Hughes, Rapidan, and Hazel.

just a heads up, hot spotting (naming) specific wild trout streams drives away the people who are potentially the most helpful.

grab your fishing equipment, fill your tank, get a couple good topo maps and go explore.
