Ok.  So this is not about fly fishing, I apologize.  I am a best man in a friends wedding and he is not a fly fisherman. I was thinking about an ocean charter for 8 guys.  The wedding is in the Outer  Banks, NC. Does anyone have any input on that area for local knowledge or any suggestions for a captain? I have never fished salt water, always stuck to fly fishing trout.

Thanks in advance,

You can have both depending on the time of year, availability and weather.  I suggest Captain Arch Bracher.  (252) 441-3197 The boat is the Pelican out of Oregon Inlet. He would be glad to talk with you about it.

Your choices get very limited above six passengers due to Coast Guard regulations requiring more computed and expensive inspections. If Mike's guy didn't come through, there's a couple marinas (Oregon Inlet being one) that run nearly every charter boat. It's a little bit of a racket. The charters are basically all fixed price and extremely expensive for the relatively short distance they have to run to the productive fishing grounds.

For a more affordable option that works with 8 people, go out with one of the head boats. These are large boats that take out 25-40 random people a day and you pay by the person, a little over $100 for a full day offshore, this is pretty redneck but fun for sure. The other charter boats will run you close to $2000 a day, and as Jeff said they only allow 6 passengers. The head boats move from wreck to wreck and you drop baits deep for black sea bass, grouper, triggerfish, snapper, etc--bring a few large coolers, most of these are great eating. You won't troll for tuna, wahoo, dolphin or marlin, but you have a lot better chance of all the guys getting in on the action. I would recommend the Miss Hatteras out of Oden's Dock, this one goes offshore most days and is more importantly is BYOB, while some others sell bar-priced beer.

Danny,
In my experience the head boats only get you into spot, croaker, and the occasional flounder. If you wanted to do this you might as well go to Jeanette's pier for the day. It is cheaper and you can come and go as you like. If you really want to get out on a boat check out Pirate's cove. With 8 your best option might be to take two boats for half day trips and split up the party. I believe this will cost around $1000 dollars for two boats for a half day. These will be inshore charters and get you into Blues & Spanish Mackerel with a shot at a King Mackerel and Cobia. Good luck.

Alexander,
Many of the head boats stay inshore, which is why I specifically recommended the Miss Hatteras for offshore. I just browsed through some old pictures and found this one from a trip on the Miss Hatty in 2008 of a good friend from college. You shouldn't expect fish like this every trip, and I think snapper have a much shorter season these days, but you can certainly catch some cool fish.

Last year I did an offshore trip for my Bachelor party. Although expensive, it was a pretty good trip (5 sails and 2 whites). If you can a) limit the number to 6 and b) afford the stiff prices, it might be worth it. August / September is prime time for whites. Overall a really fun time, just don't expect to do anything except reel....they have a pretty tight system they run.

There is one other option out of Pirates Cove (near south Nags Head) that works for 8 or more. The charter boat, owned by Capt. Allan Foreman, (sorry forgot the name of the boat, but its on the PC charter boat website) is rated for 12 or more. He does offshore bottom fishing, as well as offshore trolling. Yep, offshore fishing out of Oregon Inlet has gotten very expensive in recent years. If you pay $1,900 for boat, tip mate $250-300 if he's a good one, and pay for fishing cleaning…well, you get the idea. Call Capt. Alan personally, and see what he can offer you.

I can also highly recommend The Maurader (Capt. Troy Crane), who does both 1/2  and full days, but if you are going late May through mid-June, book a full day for cobia. His boat holds the NC record for cobia at 122 lbs, but he books up solid that time of year. Still, limit on the Intermediate boats is 6.

Make sure none of your 8 get sea sick. Several may have never been out of sight of land. If they think they may have an issue, your 8 may drop to 6. All those over the counter remedies help, but if/when you get sick, its an awful day!!!

The MIss Hatteras (mentioned above) is also a good option for 8 if you are willing to get down to Hatteras before sunrise.

Good Luck!!
