Yes, the Algonkian put-in certainly looks more like largemouth and carp water in terms of flow. 

The islands upstream would be my target, but if star grass is everywhere due to slugging flows, then time to relocate farther up or downstream.

Pro Tips for Algonkian Regional Park?

I searched through the forum but didn't really see much aside from old trip planning.   I hopped out there on my paddleboard yesterday armed with two fly rods and a backup spinning rod with a wacky worm. I was only able to produce one smallmouth sitting in what I thought to be typical largemouth water using the wacky worm. It was all way more shallow than I though it would be and there was no clear current/running water the places I paddled to. It's so much different than places like the South Fork Shenandoah, so I was kind of flying blind and guessing.   Curious if anyone has had much success there. Best zones (in general terms, not looking for a pin), time of year, type of water you're looking for, hot flies & sizes, etc. Really would appreciate it!

There are some good smallmouth there.  But it’s hard to catch them when the grass is in thick. And the jet ski guys are a real problem. I’ve had them buzz me while out in my canoe. 

I suggest you go down river to Riverbend Park.  Fun spot to paddle around and fish, although the smallmouth fishing hasn’t been as good this year as the last few years. Lots of good spots to cast the fly rod.  A murdich minnow is very effective there.  And top water flies are fun in the evening. 

I really like to go in the evening after work. And when I’m done fishing I’ll hit the Old Brogue or another restaurant for a late dinner.  Just note the closing time on the board as you drive in.  It changes as the amount of daylight gets shorter.

When I moved out here about 3 years ago, i kept hearing that wading in this area (on the Virginia side) was likely to produce a citation from Park Police & Rangers .  Has that eased up since 2023?
