November's Beer Tie is coming up next Monday, November 13, and is held at Whitlow's on Wilson in the Sandbar from 6PM-10PM. The event is very casual and attendees are encouraged to come and go as they please. As usual, burgers are half-priced and we'll have a beer special.

Rob Snowhite will be teaching the Snowhite Bacon Fly (Harry Murray much, Rob?), which is a good streamer for trout.

Look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!

Harry Murray, Al Caucci, Bob Popovics, Lee Wulff..  If he’s going to emulate fly tyers, might as well throw his name on all his flies just like the old codgers.

Only difference is Harry Murray will sell you a bottle of Murray's Aspirin to go with your Murray's Mr. Rapidan when you get a frustration headache when the fish won’t bite in Shenandoah.

I developed the bacon fly after years of fishing the Little J, Yellow Breeches, and a few trips to Colorado. A simple pattern with no overly complicated steps or ingredients. This is not a modern streamer. The fly is heavy and should not be tossed with anything under a 5wt.  The fly should be fished with a loop knot. It should be eratticly stripped. I suggest a dropper fly behind. You can strip the baccon fly then dead drift it. I have caught several big trout on a tungsten hares ear behind. I use 8lb Berkley Vanish as my tippet for this pattern with 3bb split shot above the knot.

I would appreciate if a TPFR member would teach the non slip mono knot tonight. I will bring monofilament.

This is the only streamer I fish for (non steelhead) trout.

Ingredients can be found in any well stocked fly shop. The 'hackle' is from Ebay. Search '10" black rooster tail iridescent' which are basically feather duster and craft feathers.

Hope for a good turnout tonight.

Hey Rob,

Just moved to the area and hoping to be able to make the Beer Tie tonight or next month. I was wondering how these ties work. I have my own tools, materials, and vise, but it's difficult to get the materials for the featured fly on short notice with lack of stores in our area. Are materials available for purchase/donation? Also, do C Clamp vises usually fit the tables or do you recommend pedatal vises?

Thanks and hope I can make a beer tie!
Jason

Hi Jason,

Sorry for the confusion on this but I’ll try to explain. We have a learning table where Rob Snowhite teaches a specific fly each month, and we provide vises, tools, and materials for this table for 6 people at a time; people will rotate in and out of this table from 7-9PM. You can also bring your own flies and materials and tie up any flies you want on your own.

All materials are provided, I had to procure materials from several stores on a recent road trip. Clamps work on the tables.

Prepping tools and materials for tonight. We are low on bobbins. If anyone borrowed one for the iron vise last night please drop off tonight. Thanks.
