I’ve offered to write a piece for Virginia’s DWR fishing blog on the spring shad/striper run from the VA side of the Potomac.

(I usually fish at Fletcher’s so I know that the DC side provides great access… and I have fished the VA side once near the bridge.)

But I’d be interested in thoughts from the collective on other spots along the VA side of the river, launch points for watercraft, fishing tips, conventional and fly rods, flies and conventional lures.

Happy New Year!

Thanks,

Pete

Doesn't shad fishing on the VA side happen in F'burg? 😁

Seriously though, shore fishing for shad would probably have to be in the shadow of Chain Bridge.

Yes, a trail runs along all the shoreline from at least from the bridge going downstream.

It can even be accessed by an adrenaline-inducing vertical descending/ascending trail from the GW Parkway overlook.

There are several excellent spots to fish, but I would say fly-fishing would be out of the question.

And if those spots are already taken by families or lovers, option B is to head back to the car.

Peter.  I have a piece being published in the VDWR magazine in March/April 2023 on urban fishing that features waters on the Virginia side, including a few paragraphs of fishing with Rob Snowhite under the Chain Bridge.  BTW, you can get a fly out in the current on that spot with a good roll cast of a sinking line, swing and retrieve.    Keep an eye out for that edition as it covers alot of other waters we are all very aware of.  Should be a fun read!  Gregg Rockett

Owen,

Y'all stay up north.   No shad fishing down here.  (Grin)
