Anyone familiar with the Bay around Newport, RI?  I'm doing a 2 day false albacore trip, but will be there the day before and would like to fish from shore without endangering myself on slipper rocks, etc.

Any pointers appreciated....

I’ve never fished Narragansett bay but I’ve sailed it many times. I was actually up there last weekend and saw large balls of baitfish at the surface in the bay. We had herring jumping alongside our boat one night in a new experience for me. There is a lot of current and fog can come in quickly. I’d think you’ll be best served getting in a boat for fly fishing, but you may have luck on piers and jetties if early in the morning. Many people jig for flounder and scup from bridges. Assuming it’s similar to the neighboring Buzzards Bay, if you get in a good spot you’ll find fish. The stripers really like squid. Black Bass can be found in deeper water but also well structured shallows- I caught one last weekend in 6’ within casting distance of a rocky beach on a hard lure. There are lots of bluefish too.

Let me know how the false albacore trip goes!
