To the group:  a friend asked me this weekend for a recommendation of a lake he could take a 70+ year old to learn to fly fish.  I don't do lakes.  So, I ask this group for guidance as it relates to locations within an hour of Arlington, VA, on this person's behalf.  Thanks in advance.

I’d suggest Lake Royal in Fairfax.

Couple of ideas:
     1.  Fountainhead regional park - rental rowboats give plenty of backcast room, lots of panfish to grab a small floating fly
     2.  Lakeridge park - big dock to fish for bass/panfish if you don't want to do a boat

Hmmm ...
Learning  >>  I would want space to cast, easy terrain, get anything to tug the line
70 years old  >>  I would want to stay on the shore (no boat issue distractions)
Near Arlington  >>  in addition to suggestions above -- how about Cook Lake in Alexandria, Huntsman Lake in Alexandria, multiple lakes in Reston

If a lake is not important but the other criteria are -- upper Holmes Run at second crossing

Onk makes excellent point about teaching a newcomer on-shore before ever getting in a boat with him.

With that in mind, I like Burke Lake…excellent launch area and good parking…
