Hi,
First post. Newbie fly-fisherman. picked up a Tenkara rod a year ago. Have fished with it mostly for trout in the Sierra ( quite successfully) with it but hoping to extend the hobby locally as this is where I spend 45+ weeks a year. Last weekend fished Holmes run below the dam and only caught blue gill. In the past I've also fished along the Virginia side of the Potomac near the mouth of Pimmit Run.

Wondering if there are any other Tenkara fisherman in the area? Also interested in learning about local trout areas, season, stocking dates for some of the local streams, nd other opportunities and also open to learning about other fisheries. It sounds like Bass fishing is popular in the area.

Thanks,

Mark

I'd suggest taking it up in the mountains after bookies. I've used my 1 wt as a tenkara(tying leader the the top eye) the few times I accidentally packed my reel for my 6 wt switch rod. Seemed to work pretty well so I can only imagine what an actual tenkara rod would do.

I have used my tenkara rod with great success at the headwaters of Paint Branch in Montgomery county, md. Lots of hungry top-eating fish and little pressure throughout the stream.

The westernmost spring branch of paint branch above the ICC holds trout. Seen em but never hooked one. A delicate ecosystem, thought it's probably best to look but not cast.

Holmes run is hard: you have to fish in the brief window between the stocking truck and the net-wielding poachers to have a good shot. Caught one good sized rainbow under the bridge one May as the water warmed -- was in really rough shape. Assume he/she was a holdover from the prior fall, I'd be surprised if he/she lived many more days if hours after I released, based on rising stream temp and health.

Is Homes Run no longer off-limits?

Awesome. Good to know. Does it still stink?

The better trout streams in the area are around 1.5 hours or more away.  If you head southwest, you can find plenty of mountain streams in the Shenandoah's that hold wild brookies year round.  There are other streams/rivers that VA stocks as well.  If you head north, the Gunpowder River above Baltimore is a great size stream for a tenkara rod.  It has a 7 mile catch and release tailwater that is full of wild browns.  Most are between 8-14 inches but there are some larger ones in there two.  If your willing to drive 2-3 hours, you can get out to Western Maryland on the Savage River or the Savage River State Forrest which has some excellent mountain streams for brookies.

There are other spots like the Patuxent in MD south of Baltimore, etc that stock each year, but my personal experience is that the stocked streams get pounded early and if your going to fish them and actually enjoy it, its best to wait a month or two after the stocking and see if there are any holdovers.  Otherwise, your fighting for space.

Stopped by Holmes Creek this weekend and, surprisingly, the smell is gone for the most part. A few whiffs of that nice sewer stank here and there, but nothing overwhelming. Considering my daughter and I pulled up to the trailhead about a month ago, took one smell, and had to drive away as quickly as we could to keep from gagging, this seems like a small miracle.

Anyone know if the creek will get stocked this fall, or did the water get too scorched this spring/summer?

From today's Baltimore Sun: http://bsun.md/1pNKyBL - Without a reel, tenkara fishing really catches on in Maryland

Thanks all for the reply. I've gone back to Holmes once and again caught some small bluegills much to my daughter's delight. Also checked out Accotink creek off Little River Turnpike in Annandale but was not lucky there. Not a single hit. I was impressed by how pretty the area is. Will try to visit again next weekend.

Lastly spent half a day on Jeremy's run in SNP last Sunday. Gorgeous day caught some several small brookies while learning to cast in the tight canopy and overhead brush. No pictures sadly.

One of my favorite things about tenkara is the bow-and-arrow cast. Totally practical in many situations. Found a youtube video of someone doing this with a traditional fly rig:

I see that tenkara has people writing that "connection to nature" stuff....but where are the wrist tattoos and fixed gear bikes?  Didn't tenkara start as a means of more effectively stripping as many fish as possible out of beautiful mountain streams (i.e. commercial fishing)?  I don't want to be associated with meat fishing -- I'm an artist!

I also refuse to use deet and long-sleeved clothing.  I'd rather just let mosquitoes bite me.  Pulling ticks off of your underwear line is natural!

Your choice. Lyme disease is natural too but I personally don't want to have to deal it. My sister contracted LD and was misdiagnosed. She'll be dealing with some pretty terrible side effects for the rest of her life.

Bryan -- tongue-in-cheek, I totally agree with you and douse myself (and Beth) in DEET regularly.  I meant no negativity/insensitivity toward that end.  I just really, really enjoy making fun of the (mostly) self-hating fly fishermen at any opportunity.

I enjoyed this article depicting hipsters using tenkara gear as if the techinque is something "new" or "more natural/simplistic/jedi".

That may be true, but just remember Tenkara folks!  Given the brutal slaughter of fish associated with tenkara history, you have to sort of look sad with each fish you catch while using tenkara and mutter something like "oh me" to make it okay.

To celebrate tenkara, I think I'll ride my bicycle without a seat the rest of the week!

Sorta like the whole vegan/carnivore thing. I'm not ashamed to eat a bloody steak. I do cringe just a little when I eat Veal picata, tho.

LOL!

It's too bad Sheridan Anderson didn't live to see all the hipsters astream post-A River Runs Through It. He'd have had a lot of fun making fun of the "artistes." Can you cartoon, Gene?
