Hello,

I’m posting this message using my husband’s email. He was a member of your group. Unfortunately Bryan passed away at the end of June after a short but brutal battle with cancer.

He left some fly fishing gear behind. And before he died he expressed his desire to have his stuff donated to a charity that helps veterans get on the water and do some fishing. He instructed me to post here to get advice about charities and contact info.

I would appreciate it if someone on this loop could send me in the right direction.

Many thanks

So very sorry for your loss.  Thank you for carrying on his thoughtful wishes and leaving a lasting tribute to his memory.

Project Healing Waters is such a charity.

Bob Gartner is with the Fort Belvoir chapter;
I know there is also a Walter Reed chapter.
And a chapter associated with DC Veterans' Affairs.  Bobby Davis, one of their POCs monitors this board.

I'm not sure if I can post their email addresses or contact info on this board.  But I will email both Bob and Bobby about this message.

Warmest regards,

Hi Robin,

Thanks so much for reaching and out, and we're really sorry about your loss. I didn't personally know Bryan but we'd corresponded with e-mails several times over the last few years.

In my opinion, the best group in the area to donate the gear to is Project Healing Waters, specifically the new DC chapter. They are just getting off the ground this year and are in need of gear; see a blog post about an outing they did this Spring: http://projecthealingwaters.org/regional/spring-weather-and-great-fishing-at-the-old-soldiers-home-in-washington-dc/

The contacts I have for them are Bobby Davis (robert....@gmail.com) and Dan Sheesley (d...@sheesleyenterprises.com).

Thanks,
Dalton

Hi Robin - I'm so sorry to hear that. My condolences. I never had a chance to fish with Bryan, but I worked in the Orvis shop in Clarendon, where he was a frequent visitor. He was a very friendly guy and we were always glad to see him.

You might be able to drop the gear off at the Orvis shop, if that's convenient, and have them get it to Project Healing Waters. Their number is 703-465-0004 - check with them to make sure they can help.

best,
Miles

Robin, Please accept my deepest condolence on the passing of Bryan.  For many years Bryan would drop over to the Arlington Orvis store during his lunch hour since he worked nearby.  I always looked forward to his visits when we would exchange fishing stories.  When he stopped coming over his absence did not go unnoticed.  Those of us who had been at the store for a while and knew Bryan would ask if anyone had seen Bryan recently.  Some of us surmised that maybe he had changed jobs or relocated.  Now, unfortunately, I know why he stopped dropping by.  His absence at Orvis Arlington will continue to be missed.

As other have mentioned there are a number of local non-profit organizations that I'm sure that would appreciate receiving Bryan's fishing gear.  Organizations such as Project Healing Water, Wounded Warrior Project and Frogman Outdoors are excellent organizations that help wounded military personnel through fishing are always looking for donated fishing gear.  Casting for Recovery helps cancer survivors through fishing is another excellent organization.

You can reach out to our store for the names and phone numbers of POC for each of these local organizations.

Again, my deepest condolence on the passing of our friend Bryan.

Tom

Robin,

I am sorry to hear of Bryan's passing.  I knew him through is emails to this forum and I always respected his opinions.

If you wish to donate the gear to the DC Veteran Affairs chapter of Project Healing Waters, I can help.  Dan still is the chapter coordinator (d...@sheesleyenterprises.com), but  Bobby Davis has moved on to other things.

Carl
