I've wanted to try this for a while, even if I missed the boat this year(STUPID BEING DISTRACTED AND SCHOOLWORK!). How viable would trying to fish Rock Creek for Shad be? I am fairly sure I've heard about people catching them and herring but I have no idea how long they stay in the creek or when/where they move.

I’ve only ever seen herring in Rock creek. Tossing Shad darts to them never bore fruit. For years, I fished around the mouth for Shad, but never caught one. It’s a tough area to back cast because of all the vegetation, so I was never able to cast out that far into the Potomac.

I've gone out to Rock Creek a few times a year for the last three years in search of the "the elusive Rock Creek shad" - have not seen or caught one - only schools of herring.  My best Rock Creek spring fish was a small (12-inch) striper up around the P St. bridge.

Amusingly enough I once caught a decent(I think a bit over 12? 14-15 maybe) inch rockfish up by Calvert Street...in September.

I've had success with small beaded flies like copper John's. Was probably getting, but still fun. You're guaranteed to catch some bluegill.

Yea, I'll probably try stuff like that the next time I go-usually I just go all-out for bass and do okish.

Just coming back to this because this afternoon I was spin-fishing with my son and he caught two hickory shad almost all the way up by the zoo - on a small curly-tail grub with a jighead.  An amazing catch - I was starting to believe that the Elusive Rock Creek Shad did not exist!

Ha! And this late in the year too. I wonder if it's just a matter of luck/timing-maybe they usually move too fast and this year with the cold spring they're lingering more?
