I'm going to be near Rutland (central) vermont the first week in October for at least 2 days of fishing

I'd rather fish rivers than lakes, buy am taking my kayak.

Any pointers appreciated - trout and smallmouth the preferred targets, but I've heard some other good things about the local fishing (salmon, pike).

Willing to use a guide at least a day.

The battenkill is beautiful that time of year.  Fishing will be challenging as it always is, but it is a great river.  I wouldn't think you would need a guide if you do some research in advance.   Flies will be small (olives, midges, terrestrials) unless the water is up.  In that case throw streamers.  There are some very large brown trout in that river that don't bother with the small stuff.

Agreed with Yambag, the Battenkill is the best bet in that area.  If you're willing to drive an hour or so you could put in on Southern Lake Champlain and hit some coves.

I'm in Central Vermont right now, going to hit a small lake tomorrow afternoon.  The leaves should be peaking early October, don't forget to pack warm gear.  It was 36 degrees this morning.
