I suffered through several broken rods.  I found this article helpful.  Hopefully someone can avoid a broken tip...

Only rod I ever broke while fishing was a spinning rod, my error, but it was an inferior product compared to subsequent rods.  Haven't yet broken a fly rod while fishing but there are other hazards: car doors, tailgates, dropped oars, children stepping on foolishly placed rods, etc. I've experienced at least 3 of these. ;-)

Same boat, Mark. I've broken half a dozen rods in car doors, ceiling fans, falling while hiking in to a hole, etc. Only one was broken on a fish, and I suspect that the tungsten-eyed clouser dinging the tip a few casts earlier was the real culprit.

Beats wearing it as an a pierced ear...or worse, Eric. (Been there done that too: eyebrow)

I neglected to add another way to wreck your rod is to fall down while fighting a fish and letting go of the rod. In my case, the smallie in question swam off with the whole rig, rod/reel/line. My all-time fishing screwup. In normal conversation I would express this considerably more indelicately. ;-)
