Hey TPFR,

I recently moved from Courthouse in Arlington out to Hillsboro, VA. I'm currently about 10 minutes from the Appalachian trail and right outside of Purcellville, VA. I'm looking for new areas to fish out in that area and was hoping that someone had suggestions for me. I know there are tons of streams right around my house, just wanting to know where I should spend most of my time.

Thanks in advance,
Trevor

Try to get in with the Shanondale Lake folks to gain lake access. I used to run the fly shop at former lodge there. MONSTER bass and walleye.

Harpers Ferry isn't too far and there are several boat ramps to float from point A to B.

There are also loads of spring creeks out there but doubt they are stocked.

You're right near the Shenandoah, which is great for smallies.  You can go to the route seven bridge and wade fish if you want.

I’ve done some fishing in Shenandoah with varied luck. I actually caught my first smallie there by sheer luck. Will definitely have to get back up there now that the weather is changing and I’ll have more time in the afternoons with the time change.

Thanks Rob, I finally have storage space so was thinking about getting a kayak so I can access more locations than just wading. Wish I was still working at Bass Pro Shops to get that 60% discount haha.

Trevor,
I moved from DC to Harpers Ferry several years ago. I grew up in WV, and once upon a time guided canoe, kayak, and rafting in the area. We have a wonderful smallmouth fishery. The challenge is finding a shuttle buddy!!!... and buying a license in MD, VA, WV, and DC (for shad). In Hillsboro, you are just over the hill from HF and the confluence (take 671 of course). The section of Potomac below confluence to Brunswick is one of the most productive smallmouth sections in the system.

For local gear, please try and support White Fly Outfitters in Harpers Ferry. It is owned and operated by Bryan Kelly who lives in HF. He has all the stuff - everything you need, including boats. I never worked for Bryan, so I have no business affiliation with him,  but ran shuttle for him and his guides long ago when I worked for R&T in my 20's. Water temps are coming up and the die hard guys are already (have been) catching big bass is their winter holes.

Welcome to the area - its much better than living downtown.

DC guys/gals - Any Shad yet????????

So the smallies have been few and far between on that stretch in my experience the past 3-4 years. The Shenandoah has been much more productive than the Potomac during that same stretch.

My 2 cents’.

Andy,

When you can have visitors again, make sure they stay at The Angler’s Inn in Harpers Ferry (https://www.theanglersinn.com/), Deb and Bryan’s B&B, just up the hill from historical HF.  Highly recommend.

Cheers,

Lunch suggestions in Brunswick? We’re headed that way to tomorrow. Plan is to check on possible fishing opportunities on a newly purchased piece of property with ruins of a historic mill (and hopefully a deep pool).

Boxcar Burgers is great, also beans in the belfry for coffee/snacks.
