I'm sure many of you have gotten the e-mail about this already from Urban Angler but I figured we should put it out as well.

Urban Angler in Alexandria will be closing on January 30, and will be holding a sale to clear out some inventory. Check this out if you need to pick up gear.

We hate to see you go, and thanks for all of the advice and support personally over the years, and especially for your support of TPFR! You've been a staple of our fly fishing community as long as I've lived in the area.

As a note, neither Richie nor anyone else asked me to post this, but I think it should be on our group even if it violates our commercial posting policy.

It's definitely heartbreaking to hear this. At one point, I think I literally stopped by that shop once a week on my commute home. That's definitely a good way to improve your commute.

The Urban Angler guys did a stellar job both running the shop and creating a friendly atmosphere.

Thanks for everything guys.

I stopped in today to clean up on tails. Get there before the lines, tails, leaders, books, sunglasses and DVDs are gone. It's sad to see a fly shop closing doors especially a local one. Best of luck to the guys in there.

Damn, this sucks.  My local should back in Buffalo (oak orchard flshop) just closed a couple months ago and now this.  The internet is just killing these places.

Does anyone know what the nearest flyshop is now?  The one in Frederick?

Such a shame. They were always willing to answer all of my ridiculous questions and talk to me for however long i was in there.

I really appreciate all the help they've given me.

The Internet is the answer and the problem right? With so many easily accessible options online I guess it simply just doesn't work with the insane cost of renting a space in this area. I refuse to believe the interest is not here though. No offense to Orvis or otherwise, but there's something to visiting local shops (although I guess Urban has a Manhattan location as well). Sad news indeed.

We are all sad to see this happen, but the worst of it is several great guys are losing employment. Wish all the best and hope you land on your feet.

Total bummer. I hope all you guys land on your feet. Stay in touch and let us know what's going one and/or help you might need getting situated elsewhere be it a fishing gig or driving a desk like this office drone.

Really and truly, don't be strangers and stay in touch.

I really hate hearing this.  It is a sad reality that the local fly shop is becoming an extinct notion.  I knew the owner of a local fly shop in Culpeper and he was a great guy.  It was his dream to start a fly shop.  He worked hard at making the dream the reality and he ran a nice shop.  I helped him some and guided with him a few times.  It was really painful to watch the shop close.

I wish Urban Angler the best.  It is so hard to compete with the internet guys who have little overhead since some of them don't even have brick and mortar stores.  Eventually it will be hard to find a local shop to walk into and see what local fly patterns are there.  We will be using some copied fly pattern that was tied in some foreign country.  I was told that this was the fate of Walt's Poppers too.

Sorry to hear this news.

In addition to the internet, I imagine that the vast improvements in mid-range gear arent't helping much.  15-20 years ago I wouldn't think of buying anything other than a Sage because they were by far the best rods out there (along with T&T and Winston).  Even though I have way more disposable income now, my last few rods have been TFO, Echo, and Beulah simply because there isn't much dropoff from the top rods which would have been more than double the cost.  I am sure the shops I bought those from made way less from me then if I would have shelled out $800+ for Sage, T&T etc.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys.  We really appreciate it.

I wont go into the multitudes of reasons why things just didn’t work out…  internet sales, all of our major manufacturers going direct to consumer, having our shop handicapped by refusing to let us run travel or in-house guiding, high rent, no marketing or advertising, etc…  the bottom line is sales kept declining because people just weren’t coming in or spending much anymore.  We tried to make it work.  We were just losing too much money.  NY had to pull out.

We’re all still staying in the area.  We’ll all still be here, making it to the beer ties, and I’m hosting the F3T film tour this year personally – March 23rd.  Will update the group with details later.

I’m also working on building a new shop in the northern VA area.  It takes way too much money to do this, so if anyone has a few hundred thousand dollars laying around and you want to be the proud owner of northern VA’s premier fly fishing shop, please shoot me an e-mail   ;)

See you guys at the next beer tie.

I'll echo that this is obviously very sad to see. I need to drop in and buy a bunch of urban hats so we don't run out.  Beth had her's on earlier, as always --

Hey Richie,
Whenever the time is right to start thinking about a new shop you should consider sharing the story on Kickstarter. It's a great website to help raise money and fund projects.

Matt,

Thanks for the thought.  I wish I had checked my mail when I had gotten in to see this and talk when you were in.

I’ve considered it but in the long run, having to wait 3 months for funding, and then another 6-10 months for building out the store potentially leaves me over a year without gainful employment.  That’s the scariest part.  Not sure I could work full time and build out a new store at the same time.

Thanks for supporting the shop and I’ll make sure to let everyone know if the shop actually happens.

I work right across the street from Urban Angler - they showed folks how to cast in our company's parking lot. I am so bummed to hear this! Yall were great and always gave friendly, helpful advice. Where will I go during my lunch breaks now? Ross!?

Best of luck on your next endeavors.

Sorry to hear guys.  You and the store will sorely be missed!  Thanks Rich for keeping up the F3T this year.  I've been taking my young son for the past several years and he has it on the calendar already!  The fact he won a nice pair of Costas last year didn't hurt.  :o)  You all have done a great deal for the local fishing community and made an impact here that will last.  Best of luck to all of you.
