So today I spent the afternoon by the George Mason Memorial. 1 big bite that took the fly & nothing else on minnows & a black woolly bugger. I ended up spending most of my time untying knots I created by bad casts into the wind. Any good beginner fly casting tips that will keep me from getting all tangled up?

Don't feel bad.  I went out last evening...under the small bridge that leads to the Pentagon harbor from about 1800-1930.  Tried surface bugs and some streamer work and not even a bite.  Did see plenty of fish chasing and eating things (either on the surface or chased there)....but nothing bit at any of my presentations.

I then rode my bike over to FDR and fished that area (about 1945 until 2100).  Very little to no surface action. Again tried surface bugs and a few streamers.  Not a thing.

It was pretty windy with that strong push from the South, that made casting fun at times.

It was a beautiful bike ride back to the hill though, and nothing beats just getting out and fishing (even without the fish part).

From the old hands out here....is this normal?

Cheers

Actually caught a fish this Sunday morning in the Tidal Basin.  On the basin ~0600, biked home around 0900.  Could see fish rising and grabbing stuff on the surface, so I started with that.  Two hours of nothing over by the FDR side.  Jumped on the bike and rode over to the East side of the Jefferson and started casting there.  First cast, bass took my carp bug.  Not a huge fish...but it was a fish.  No more bites after that although I did see this massive bass go completely airborne about 50 yards out into the basin...it was a BIG bass.  Continued working that area of the basin until 0900...when pretty much all surface activity stopped.  It was like a switch.  I did see one carp come up about 8 yards from the wall...grab a breath then sink back down.

I'm still trying to find the perfect lure or perfect cast/time of day to catch the whoppers I know lurk in the basin.

Maybe next time.

Cheers
Collin

I was on the FDR side (closer to the outflow) Friday evening and the bluegills were active, but not biting as much as I would like.  My fishing companions were using worms and doing much better.  Plenty of white perch, bluegill, yellow perch and a decent sized catfish on the worms.   I was able to catch a few decent size bluegill on a white/flashy woolly bugger.  No bass and yes, there was a big carp hanging out near the wall. He wasn't interested in my bugger.
