Read about the first hickory shad catches on Thursday in Shad Report #1. If you haven't heard, we have moved to the Friends of Fletcher's Cove website. The Potomac may blow out on Sunday so take advantage today!

Thinking of fishing Fletchers tomorrow, does anyone have any shad updates?
Thanks

Buddy fished it today.

Said: “ Well the river at Fletchers is still pretty turbid despite the readings on the Little Falls gauge” and “ I'm told the bite was decent at low tide this morning, but the incoming brought a lot of muddy water with it”

He caught one shad.

i fished most of the day. started fishing at 8:30. i agree that the water looked dirtier than the gauge suggested. still, probably 18 inches of visibility. the guys on the boats that i could see were nailing it. between me and my fishing partner, landed 25ish from the bank.

Mason Springs on the Mattawomen was producing shad. I caught 20 in short order on Wednesday. On Friday a friend caught 36 I believe before 10:00am. Then the bite dropped off.

Thanks for the feedback.

I’m going to try Fletchers in my yak in AM and report back. If anyone wants to join me, I’ll be in a F&S shadowcaster.

Has anyone tested the shad bite on the Anacostia or tributaries thereof?

AAR this morning at Fletchers. Downstream from yak put in, just up from Walkers Point, a dozen in about 4 hours, shore guys were doing well.

Somewhat related, this nifty little Google map with fishing spot names near and south of FC: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1cxThM7ygDPvZXHG2YdpO4nBPpU0&hl=en_US

Hi, being new to FF for Shad this year and regrettably I was not able to attend the last Casting Church where that was discussion point.  Can anyone let me know if C&O Canal lock 21 is traditionally a place where Shad can be caught?  and is the river accessible there, looks like it was?  I've been down there just a few times for walks and it's close to my office which is why I am asking.
thanks
Artie

Lock 21 on the Canal, as in Swain's Lock?  Sorry, that's too far above Great Falls for the American and Hickory shad being discussed.  On the Potomac, upstream from Little Falls it's not worth it for shad fishing.

Yea, tbh depending on where you live you're probably better off either making shad a weekend thing (if out towards Fredrick) or a morning before work/cut out early thing (if you reverse commute). But Violette's lock is near you and that's very good in the summer for smallmouth bass if it's a good year for bass.
