I'm looking for a good bluegill/bream spot to take a beginner. I've got a small boat(13' Gheenoe). My go to spot for taking kids and beginners has always been the bay down river of the haul path at Dyke Marsh. This is the first Fall I've seen it completely fill up with hydrilla...there's not even a small channel in the center. Any suggestions for a good spot for mid-Sept bluegills would greatly appreciated.

Fish the bridges or Arlington shoreline on the outgoing tide.

I don't have any suggestions, but it seems that the best bluegill ponds do fill up with weeds.  It's the nature of a bluegill pond.
The only answer I know is spring (or moving water).

Bull Run. I've only gone a few times but it's full of bluegill and they are fond of poppers.

+1.  We actually live closer to Bull Run now and hit it for a few hours Sunday (Dan's recommended section always produces well).  The place is thick with bluegill, and the occasional bass and crappie in the deeper spots.  While we were there (~10:00 - 2:00) there were a TON of Tricos dancing around all over the place in the slow sections immediately after riffles.  I flipped a few rocks and they were covered in #20-24 mayfly nymphs (and algae), as expected.  Lots of midges too --

It's a good place to go have fun if you don't want to get too far out of town --

Bring bugspray and long pants because the ticks and chiggers out there SUCK.

FYI, launching a boat at Bull Run Marina is challenging.  I fish out of my kayak there once a month or so.  You'll need to buy a key at Fountainhead Regional Park to get access.

Another vote for Bull Run. I wade the stretch around Hemlock Overlook (also at Dan's suggestion) and have caught a lot of bream. In fact, I have trouble topwater fishing for smallies here because the bluegills won't leave a popper alone.

Bull Run is fishing great for Bluegill and other small fish.  I'm still new to fly fishing and wanted to work on my casting, so I went to Bull Run today targeting the Bluegill.  I normally fish Hemlock but today I parked at the lot off of route 28 at the Prince William/Fairfax boarder and fished down stream.  The water is clear and low but I found them around fallen trees in the deeper pools along outside bends.  I had non stop action from about 2-4 today on a hopper dropper rig.  At one point I caught 4 different species on 4 consecutive casts, smallmouth, punkin'seed, bluegill, and largemouth. Picture is typical of what I caught today with the hopper dropper, none of the fish had any size but I got some good practice and had a good time.
