I am fishing for a recommendation for floating the New River for smallmouth on the fly in the early summer.

Can anyone point me to a guide or outfitter who fishes out of Blacksburg or thereabouts that they've enjoyed fishing with?

Many thanks!

Matt Reilly fishes the New and he's been hammering musky lately according to Facebook. Never fished with him so can't speak from personal experience, but I have a very good impression of him based on his website, blog, and facebook posts. He's a young gun. I think Matt Miles fishes the New as well, but someone else should confirm. I'm jealous you're gonna fish the New, it's on my bucket list!

I will second Matt Reilly. He's a stand up guy and absolutely kills it on the New River. It's also worth looking into his trout trips he offers in the fall. He catches some really nice wild fish (https://www.mattreillyflyfishing.com/location-x).

Reilly looks great, too. Thanks for these recommendations, Misha and Charlie!

I fished with Matt Miles this past summer on both the James and Staunton/Roanoke. Great guide working out of Amherst, VA. I just wanted to look to someone who considers the New to be home water.

Thanks again,
Owen
