Hey guys,

I am new to the DC area as far as fishing goes, I just started working at Orvis (with Art), and was an avid fisherman back in Iowa with a spinner and baitcaster, but have made the switch to fly fishing. I love fishing for smallmouth, northern pike, and walleye. My associates told me to post on here to see what is the best area within an hour of Arlington to fish? Appreciate any help!

Trev how’s it going!

Like you I’m new to the area but not to worry..
Fish are around.

Within dc there is the tidal basin which holds bass, stripers, snakehead and catfish. There are other species in there too but I believe those are the most targeteted.

The C and O canal is another great spot to which offers site fishibg for carp but also holds bass.

Burke lake is another sweet option , located in Burke Virginia. They have boats rentable for 45 with a trolling motor and the lake holds a strong bass, musky, walleye, and bluegill (I think) population.

Shanendoah is also a good bet for brookies, albeit about an hour forty five from dc.

Check out this article I wrote for TU about fishing around here

Tight Lines!

I regularly fish Great Falls Park (Fisherman’s Cove and River Bend Dam) for smallies, largeoutjs and blue gills) with some success..

You'll also want to check out the Gunpowder sometime.

When I moved here I was strictly a west coast river guy (trout/steelhead/salmon/shad) with some bass pond fun sprinkled in. From that perspective it was a tough transition, particularly as I was previously able to be on the water for steelhead/halfpounders year-round within ten minutes of leaving my door.

However, once I realized the possibilities stripers offer on the bay, potomac and tribs, it was a major revelation.

Stick with the stuff you enjoy, but don't be afraid to branch out. The first time I found myself in a kayak surrounded by acres of breaking fish and diving birds, I knew things were going to be ok.

Welcome Trev,

A lot of good advice already given. I noticed you mentioned pike - unfortunately not many of those around here (some of the Baltimore water supply reservoirs have them), but if you are willing to drive about an hour to hour and a half from your location, you can find some good pickerel fishing. Not as big as pike on average (but can still reach 24-30"), but it's the same exciting style of fishing. Some sort of watercraft is helpful for fishing most of the swampy places they frequent.  Worth a try if you find yourself missing Northerns!

What part of Iowa were you in, I was just looking into fishing in the davenport area as my older brother in law is there. Welcome to the area. I'm out in annapolis and the stripers a quite fun, not quite tarpon, but they will give you a good run for your money if you hook a big one.

I'm also used to fishing left coast as I work in Alaska and my parents live in Oregon, but the technical challenges of fishing gunpowder are amazing, it really is a good environment for teaching you how fickle trout can be.
