Any guesses on when the first shad will be caught?

Next year, I think we should do a club fundraiser pool on the date of the first catch. Something like $5 to buy a guess on which date will give us the first shad reported/proven caught out of the Potomac. Half the pot goes to TPFR, half goes to the winner(s). I always remember this idea when it's too late to implement for the current year's shad run, then forget about it until same thing happens the following year. If people like the idea, someone try to remind us next year.

My guess is 3/25, we're about to hit some cooler weather but should see a significant warmup around this time, and not much rain between now and then.

Fletcher's is supposedly renting boats on the 23rd. I expect the first fish will be caught before then.

So I was looking at Instagram and saw this post.

They’re here folks. Anyone want to go tomorrow ? I have never been but would love some advice if anyone is down to fish.

Chad, I've never fished for shad either but would love to give it a try on Sunday. Do you or anyone else (maybe someone on here that knows how to catch them) want to get together on Sunday to give it a shot?

Possibly Jacob. I’m going to widespread panic tomorrow and Sunday so I’m not positive what kind of shape I will be in.

If you could swing tomorrow AM I can do that for sure.

Sorry to double post,
But would love a general area of where to go, I have all the right gear and flies just no boat or yak so need spot that’s good from shore. Would chain bridge be good or maybe too early?

Anywhere between Fletcher's and chain bridge that you can get in should work. There aren't a ton of places with great back casting room so if you can find one that is a plus. It's still pretty early so keep your extra expectations reasonable.

First hickory shad was caught by Alex Friday evening. River is high and murky but plenty fishable this weekend. First fly rod catch and American shad catch still open!
