Hi everyone,

So after much reading about the virtues of double handed sticks, I've taken the plunge and have an 11' 7wt switch headed my way. I have a couple places in mind where I intend to put it to use, including of course the tidal potomac area, but apart from a couple bits and pieces I've cobbled together from searching the forum archives, I'm wandering if folks have some good recommendations for rivers in the mid-Atlantic (day-trip or weekend-trip from DC) where they've particularly enjoyed having a DH rod on hand - namely for trout and smallmouth. I look forward to trying it out on parts of the NB Potomac, but would love other recommendations based on your experiences.

Thanks,
Bruce

I am not a believer in fishing two handed rods for the sake of it, but I imagine you could use one on the shenandoah.  Fish probably wouldn't match up to that rod but you could still use it.   Maybe the James?  Rappahannock?  If you are open to driving to NY then there are a ton of places you could use it for steelhead.  People also use them on the delaware for trout and shad.

NB Potomac also came to mind but you already had that.

For NB Potomac I think I'd choose a glass rod so I can jam the reel into the bottom and use the other end as a wading staff -- that river is a bit big for my comfort level.

I suspect I'd really enjoy DH rods, but I probably don't fish the tidal Potomac enough to warrant adding another expensive bunch of gear and I never fish Salmon/Steelhead anywhere.

That said, if I enjoyed using DH rods and wanted to use them somewhere, I'd do it.  Fun is as good a reason to do something as any, and is probably better than most.

At the risk of giving up secrets, the only place I use a 2 hander here in on the NB.  I use an 11’ 7wt with 375gr Skagit and a type 3 tip.

That’s all I’m gonna say.

Hey Richard,

I know better than to ask for secrets, but any nudge in the right direction is appreciated! Thanks for your thoughts.

Anyone ever tried on the Yough?  or the New?  A little farther but seem like 2-Handers on those rivers would be ideal for Trout/Smallies.

Riverbend park on the potomac has some decent water for 2 handers. Close by as well. The nature center is the better parking lot IMO. I have seen some pretty big fish come out of there over the past few years.

John/Steve,

The Yough is also one that I was tossing around in my head. It's big water. I've floated it and done the bike and wade option. Fun river for some solid rainbows and smallmouth. I think it's a good candidate. Thanks.

Danny - I get down to Bath Country fairly regularly and was thinking about the Jackson. I can cover the upper section with a 5 wt, but I'm less familiar with the tailwater sections. Only fished one small stretch below Indian Draft (I believe). Never been to Back creek, but I'll take a look. thanks.

The New River near Blacksburg would be awesome.  Sadly I got into fly fishing after going to college there, but the spin fishing was fantastic during the summer.  I guess a switch rod would be pretty awesome near Mccoy.
