A little off topic but I couldn't think of a better group of people to ask. I found this bug hiding in my porch umbrella. Anyone know what it is?

Had to have been 3in long. And it made some kind of loud bug shriek before is scampered off into my yard.

Could I follow this up with another bug ID request. This is only the second time I've ever seen this bug, but I got a picture of it this time. They are huge - a whole day's worth of fish food in one bite! I did an overnight kayak trip down the James between Eagle Rock and Buchanan (pics/gopro vid to come) and this pterodactyl flew straight to my lantern.

It looked like 4 huge dragonfly-esque wings that folded back over the body, and a huge thorax. Also, two inch long pincers on its head.

Thanks!

Forrest

Insects are endlessly fascinating and usually incompatible with young daughters in which case it causes this ear-splitting keening and screaming at nearly but not quite the frequencies dog can hear. ;-) Ryan's is some kind of beetle, possibly a helpful one that eats insect pests. Not sure about yours, Forrest, I'm having trouble making it out.
