Am headed down to that area for a long weekend with relatives, thinking of bringing along my fly rod and throwing it into some of the ponds that are located in the community where they live.  Still investigating/asking if it's allowed by whatever HAO governs them...but if it is allowed:

Best flies for anything this time of year down there?  Figure it's colder and the fish probably aren't hitting surface bugs and such.  Thoughts?

Cheers

It's not THAT cold. I'd still bring some poppers.

What's the deal with getting your fly rod and vest through carry on at Reagan/TSA?

TSA has never given me a problem with fishing gear. At worst, you might have the airline make you check your carry on if you have two other things. Still never happened to me. I think the gate agents are smart enough to know a rod tube can fit in top of other stuff.

Agree should not be an issue. International flights are sometimes a little more problematic,  but domestics are good for me.

Wire leaders may be a problem - I haven't tested this - but I've taken reels and rods and flies through no problem (not my entire vest but that has a knife etc). I have had a rod case (not a tube - one that holds four three piece rods) routinely counted as a second bag. I also have put rod tubes inside checked baggage without incident. I have found Miami airport security to be sticklers.

Here is a trick that I learnd from Dan Davala. Print the TSA fishing tackle policy from the airports website and bring it with you. I did that this year flying into Spokane WA. The TSA agent asked to open my rod case and when he saw all the hooks he got a supervisor. I handed the supervisor the policy and then he said "thank you for your patience sir" and let me go with no hassle.

Art - I suppose a PDF of the same policy on your phone would turn the trick too?

I did the same thing as Art.... most the time I don't even get questioned but one time i did and it  went like this
TSA: what's in the case
me: fly fishing rods and tackle
TSA: I don't think those are allowed
me: I believe they are, they are listed as such on your website (i started pulling the paper out)
TSA: oh ok your fine, I've never read those

kind of makes me question TSA haha

I appreciate your responses. Still a little confused.

I have a single fly rod/reel, it's a three piece set that comes in a 3
foot or so rod/reel padded case. Not huge, normally I just sling it
over a shoulder. I was planning on making this a carry on only
luggage trip. Getting it through TSA looks do-able.

Guess my question is...will that be allowed on the flight as carry on.
I'm checking the AA site and it's not really helpful. I was just
planning on throwing it up in an overhead bin.

Like I mentioned, it's up to the gate agents, but I've ever had an issue with my 4-piece rod tubes. The 4 piece tubes exceed the length dimension that most airlines allow (22 inches), but for something like a rod tube, they often ignore the rule since it can fit above normal suitcases. You basically just need to hope you don't get someone having a really bad day.

You will be fine.  I carry two piece rods on all the time and have never had to check them.  Like someone else mentioned, worst case is they don't fit in the overhead and they put them in the closet for you.  The people at security never care.  One time I had to take it out of the tube but that was it.

Thought I would post the results of my trip.  Weather was awesome...70's.  Fished for two evenings and morning periods in one of the local golf course ponds just down the street from the rent-in-laws house near West Pam Beach.  Various top lures used.  I caught a few more fish than these photos.  My last cast on the final morning, some huge monster came up and took my popper and headed back under cover...snapped the lure right off the line.  Nice way to end this small excursion.  No issues getting my fly gear through TSA, just expect them to pull out your tackle and take a gander through it (West Palm did that, DCA did not).

Now just waiting for the warm weather to show up here in DC.

Cheers
