Hi,

I'm new to the Northern Virginia area and I've been looking for nearby places to do some smallmouth bass fishing. I've hit difficult run in Mclean, VA but I haven't had much luck. Does anyone know of some decent water I can fish? Thanks!

Float the Potomac from above Harpers Ferry, WV down to Brunswick, MD. Great smallie fishing all summer. Also the James River near Scottsville, VA.

I've had some success at Great Falls Park fishing the cove at the kayak launching site, but you'll have to wait for the water to recede.  Tim

In stretches (below Harper’s Ferry) there are tubers. It’s a wide river, though. Plenty of space for all... I have a great guide too if you’re interested.

Thanks man. I'm probably just going to put my kayak in. Although it does look rocky as hell on google maps

Not so much, actually. Certainly not with the water up like this.

I've caught a few decent smallies in Goose Creek in Leesburg and Bull Run near Manassas.  And the water levels are way too high currently, but the Monocacy River near Frederick MD is pretty good and easy to get to. It's running around 900 cfs now but I like it below 400 for easy wade fishing.

The Shenandoah has a number of different floats with plenty of outfitters that can shuttle you if you don't have a second car.

I second the Bull run recommendation.  You'll Need to do a little map exploring to figure out where to go,  but get in off of balmoral drive in Clifton and you will find them.

I've heard the Monocacy River is pretty much unfishable near where it dumps into the Potomac. What stretches are good?

I've done well pretty much anywhere you can find access from the Park Mills Rd bridge upstream right through the Frederick area. There are many access points and you can probably wade 90% of it at typical summer flows (wouldn't attempt wading right now though).  The biggest drawback to the Monocacy is that it gets very muddy after any significant rain and can take days to clear up again.

was in bull run last week flailing at carp.....

Water is a bit high, but very fishable.  Clarity is decent as well.
